Copper-alloy Roman shield boss missing only its rivets, c. 43 - 410 AD. The shield boss is formed from a concave, domed knob with a wide, flat flange. Four lozenge-shaped rivet holes pierce the flange, spaced equally around the central knob. The edges of the rivet holes bend out on the underside, suggesting that the rivets were pierced through from the upper side. The upper surface of the shield boss is marked by a pair of grooves running in parallel to each other around the outer edge of the shield boss.
