This object appears to be a 19th-century confirmation medal as manufactured by the Woodhouse die-engraving business established in Dublin in the 1820's and active for many decades. The medallion depicts multiple religious symbols portraying on the obverse a Teutonic style cross with alternating long and short lines suggesting the radiating sun. The reverse again shows the radiating sun with a sword projecting through a bible, the empty cross, the 10 commandments, a Bishops mitre, a chalice and palm fronds all projecting from what appears to be an altar. The legend around the centre of…

Modern pierced white metal commemorative medallion. The borough of Colne had this medallion struck in celebration of the anticipated coronation of Edward VII on 26 June 1902. The coronation of Edward VII and his wife Alexandra, actually took place at Westminster Abbey on 9 August 1902. It had been postponed at the last minute because the King had been taken ill and required immediate surgery to drain an abdominal cyst. The obverse consists of double profile bust of the king and queen & is inscribed EDWARD VII QUEEN ALEXANDRA. The portraits are not of the first order. The reverse shows…

Double-headed lead medallion, depicting two faces - one on either side. This item has been discussed in the Searcher (May 1986). One of the readers, Anthony Runge, writes: "... it dates from 1678, the year of the Popish plot. In that year, Sir Edmund Berry (Edmondbury) Gofrey, a magistrate, was strangle with his own cravat at the watergate of Somerset House. His body was hidden for a few days, then taken to Primrose Hill, at that time still in the countryside, and dumped in a ditch transfixed with his own sword. This sordid little episode, for which a number ofpeople were later hanged…

Copper alloy coin or medallion with a diameter of 36mm and a weight of 13.23g. This piece is incredibly worn. On the obverse there is a faint trace of a bust right which might have the features of Carausius (AD 286-93) - sadly this cannot be captured on a photograph. Although this might seem far-fetched, the British Museum has a medallion of Carausius which measures 38mm in diameter and weighs 13.21g. The BM piece is made of orichalcum (brass) and appears to have been overstruck on an earlier dupondius of the first of second centuries AD. It is just possible that this new find is s…
