Cast cu-alloy pommel piece dating from the medieval period, i.e. from c. AD1250-1500. It is circular in shape with a vertical perforation through the centre which would have received flat, thin terminal of the hilt plate and kept the hilt in place. It would have also acted as a counter-balance to the weight of the blade. The pommel is a 'wheel-shaped' pommel of Type VIII (see reference below). These pommels are common in the 13th/14th century and bigger examples are known to have come off swords. The smaller size of this example, however, suggests that it was a dagger- rather than a sw…

The underside is hollowed (measuring 37.16mm in length and 6.18mm in width, tapering to 2.86mm in width at either end). The design on the quillon comprises of two horizonal lines towards the top edge and a singular hor…

Middle Bronze Age copper alloy probably a dirk of Type Keelogue dating 1400 to 1100BC and belonging to the Acton Park MW tradition of the Middle Bronze Age. The daggers edges are corroded but fairly intact. The blade has a central midrib and is broken and probably had two rivets. The blade is lentoid in section, narrow, tapering with angled sides. The tip of the blade is slightly sub-rounded which is more likely to relate to a dagger and appears to be intact. Burgess and Gerloff write: "This type is characterised by broad and heavy blades, with wide trapezoidal butts which are usually…

An extremely rare and important Chalcolithic tanged copper dagger dated by XREF analysis to the early Bronze Age 2400 -2,100BC. Most examples occur in early Beaker 'classic' grave assemblages associated with low-carinated Beakers, wrist guards, etc. The dagger is composed of a blade and hilt plate and there is no obvious break at the end of the hilt plate. The hilt plate would have been of organic material, probably wood, horn or antler. The blade is roughly triangular-shaped and tapers towards the tip. The edges are bevelled, but there are no signs of wear and no resharpening marks. …

A complete cast copper-alloy dagger quillon of late medieval to early post-medieval date, that is dating from c. AD1400-1600. The quillon is roughly diamond-shaped and has a central oval tang hole and on either side there is a quillon that expands to form a faceted terminal. Rising from the junction between the quillon and the tang hole is an openwork guard which is still complete if slightly bent. It may have been semi-circular, trifurcate or, most likely, heart-shaped. The quillon is concave on one side and convex on the other. It is similar in form to No.628, illustrated in Read's …

An incomplete cast copper alloy dagger dating from the Early Bronze Age, c.2150-c.1500BC. The object is a butt riveted small blade dagger or knife with triangular blade. The blade would have been attached to the hilt by means of three large rivets, the top side one is still in place. The rivet is circular in cross-section and flat-hourglass-shaped in plan. The other two are missing and the other rivet holes are incomplete due to breaks or possibly corrosion. The object is quite damaged so it is difficult to ascertain the exact type, but it is similar to Needham's series 2 (id 1200 Car…

Probably an incomplete Middle Bronze Age or early Late Bronze Age dagger or dirk (probably the former). It is plain and in fair condition with a smooth patina and only some evidence for corrosion and bronze disease. The hilt section is incomplete but it was likely that the organic holt was attached with two (or potentially four) rivets, now missing. There was a slightly raised mid-rib and the edges re bevelled, giving the blade a flat-lozenge cross-section. The section immediately past the hilt section does not draw in, so the identification as a dagger appears more likely. However, a…
