Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A fragment of copper alloy, probable casting waste, possibly of Bronze Age dating (2150 BC to 800 BC). However, due to the lack of context and continuation of casting styles, this fragment could be dated from the Bronze Age through to the Roman Period (c.2150 BC - 410 AD). The fragment is sub triangular in plan, and roughly D shaped in cross section. It has an irregular, rough surface. It is most likely part of a copper ingot, prior to being smelted and cast. It is a mid to dark green colour. A couple of small areas of iron staining, probably due to impurities in the copper. An e…

A fragment of a cast copper alloy casting or smelting waste, probably dating from the Middle or Late Bronze Age, i.e. c. 2000-800BC. It is likely that this is a fragment of a cu-alloy 'cake', ie the cu-alloy residue left over from the smelting process. This would then be broken into smaller pieces that various different artefacts can be cast from. Cake fragments such as this are a rare find for North West England. They are much more common in East Anglia as both single finds and in Late Bronze Age metalwork hoards. Dimensions: length: 42mm, width: 29mm, thickness: 22mm and weight: 86.24g.

Unidentified object or casting waste, possibly Late Bronze Age c. 1000-800BC. Object is long and narrow and has two distinct parts, this caused by corrosion. The forepart is tapered slightly and has a knob on the tip, whilst the hindpart looks to be square with a hole in the middle which does not go throught to the front of the object. These two parts are connected by a narrow bridge of metal. Dimensions: length: 40mm, width: 12mm, thickness: 7mm and weight: 9.15g.

Cast lead object. Possibly casting waste. The object is an irregular shape being tapered at one terminus and circular in section, and the opposing terminus is flat in section and wide. There is a 45 degree angle bend in the artefact which appears in profile. Possibly Roman in date due to the nature of the site where recovered.

A lead alloy object of post-medieval date. The fragment is incomplete and has possibly formed as casting waste. It is sub-oval in plan and flat. The edges of the object are undulating and the upper face is smooth. The upper face has been inscribed with the name William Aspinall. The opposite face of the object is worn and plain. It has a light brownish-white patina. The object may relate to William Aspinall of Lathom who is recorded as a boat person in the 1800s, see http://www.boatfamilies.org.uk/getperson.php?personID=I13800&tree=CanalFamily1. Undateable gold or yellow metal object, probably metal working waste, possibly Early Medieval bullion. It is sub-circular in plan and oval in cross-section. The globular form is undiagnostic, and it is therefore not possible to date with any degree of certainty. The weight is quite close to that of a half-ertog or eyrir (4 or 4.26g), but not sufficiently close to justify a firm date, especially since the object does not appear to be a finished item, which means the weight may not be significant on any weight standard. Metal working melts are known from the Viking Age, but the artefact…

A probable piece of cast copper alloy waste; a casting well of unknown date. The remnant would have been from the funnel shaped neck of a mould. Consequently, the waste itself is funnel shaped, sub-conical, with an oval, uneven top surface, and tapering towards a broken runner or sprue 'foot'. There is a second runner, perhaps leading to the next mould, projecting to the side. The object is 22.7mm long, 9.7mm high, 16.8mm wide and weighs 7g. It has a grey green patina. For a similar, although lead alloy, example see HESH-CFC988. A number of these objects have been dated to the B…

A copper alloy casting sprue/jet of probable Roman date. A truncated cone shaped body with a single projection. It has a slightly concave base. The casting jet has a mid green. These sprues are commonly found in late Bronze Age hoards, but can be of other dates as well and it is possible that it is Roman used in the making of a small object like a brooch. Similar to LANCUM-E8F754, LEIC-370216, SF-7BABF5 and WILT-FA4F72 14mm in height, 18mm in diameter, and weighs 8.06 grams.
