Honey brown flint pebble with multiple removals. It has either been used as a source for microliths or it is a tool or core that was abandoned due to excessive fracturing. Mid Mesolithic to early Bronze Age in date (c6500 to c1500 BC). The length is 27mm, width 16mm, thickness 11mm, and the weight is 7.6g. A number of chert lithic items, & a few flint ones, have also been found in the vicinity. John Hallam directed a dig in the area some time ago. Two robust pieces of 'Marles Wood' black chert debitage. There exists the possibility that they may be rough outs for tools. Probably Bronze Age, but they could be anytime from the early Mesolithic to the late Bronze Age. Dating between c8300 and c800 BC, most likely c2500 to c800 BC. 1 - The length is 33mm, width 23mm, thickness 18mm, and the weight is 9.5g. 2 - The length is 40mm, width 24mm, thickness 14mm, and the weight is 13.3g.

Object type: BORER
Broad period: BRONZE AGE
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Bronze Age black chert tool, banded with limestone. Probably a heavy duty borer or similar as the 'pointy end' is high quality black chert. It may possibly be a core but its hard to envisage why the knapper be striking flakes from the limestone apart from doing it to produce a shape. Probably Bronze Age due to comparitive crudeness of knapping, but could be anytime from the early Mesolithic to the late Bronze Age. Dating between c8300 and c800 BC, most likely c1500 to c800 BC. The length is 40mm, width 40mm, thickness 30mm, and the weight is 56.8g.

Mesolithic worked translucent grey/brown flint graver/burin on a blade. An attempt has been made to remove 12mm of the dorsal ridge at the distal end with three removals. Mid Mesolithic to early Neolithic flint microlith. The high quality flint is a pale grey to greyish white with occasional white pinpoint inclusions. The bulging (1mm to 3mm) ventral side has been left untouched with the exception of one microflake. This was probably to remove an imperfection just below the cortex. The dorsal has much more complex working. It has been worked in three stages to produce the implement. The initial two stages are probably from preparation on the core (overall effect has been to reduce the overall thickness) as the working is from the distal end. The third …

Mid to late Bronze Age mottled mid to late grey chert burin, possibly also used as a chisel. It is sub square in section and knapped in the crude fashion diagnostic of the later Bronze Age The knapping toward the proximal is more controlled than that of end of the Bronze Age and the beginning of the Iron Age. With the exception of the proximal end, where cortex remains, there are removals to the entire surface. The knapping toward the proximal narrows and shapes the section in a manner that suggests it was originally mounted on the end of a piece of wood or antler. Dating to between c…
