This is a socketed clay pipe bowl (socket broken off) depicting Alexander II, the Russian Czar (1818-1881). The pipe was made by Gambier, one of the best known French pipe manufacturers, who specialised in making high quality figural pipes. It was their pattern number 822 and was already in production by 1868, since it is shown in a catalogue of that year. The firm continued producing pipes until about 1920 and so this piece could have been made at any time between about 1860 and 1920. Gambier pipes are relatively common in late C19th English contexts since they were imported in large…

Bowl of clay pipe dating from the 17th century, most of the stem missing. The stem's perforation is off-centre and the small spur does not bear a maker's mark. The only decoration is rouletting around the outer rim of the small bowl. The small size of bowl and spur and the off-centre perforation suggest a date in the early 17th century.

A body sherd of probably medieval pottery from a ceramic vessel. The sherd is 87.18mm long, 57.5mm wide and 9.3mm thick. It is an orange coloured fabric with dull black angular inclusions, especially on the outer surface. There are also smaller white inclusions and some mica or quartz. The fabric is hard, rough and hackly. It is wheel turned. There is no glazing. This sherd is probably from a medieval pot, but only an expert with knowledge of local pottery types could determine the ware and exact date.

Small vessel fragment probably dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. The vessel was made of skin-coloured earthenware. The fabric looks like it was tempered with small quartzite crystals and probably some organic material that got burned in the kiln, but left impressions in the fabric. The sherd probably came off a medium-sized lipped bowl.

Small vessel fragment probably dating from the later medieval or post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1400-1700. The vessel was made from light skin-coloured earthenware and it seems to have had a greenish or yellowish glaze on the obverse. The glaze is very worn and only the light-coloured slip between glaze and vessel body can be seen still in some places. The fabric was tempered with larger and medium-sized quartzite as the surface is quite rough to the touch. There are very worn finger marks on the inside and it is likely that this is a fragment of medieval or post-medieval bowl.

It was made from light-colour red/orangey earthenware, but the surface is very worn and it is difficult to ascertain whether or not it had been glazed. It is, however, likely that it was. The fabric is not very fine, but it does not show many inclusions except some small larger fragment of quartzite. Several small fragments of a clay pipe bowl and stem probably dating from the 18th or 19th century. The bowl was plain with no moulded ornament on the sides or along the mould 'seams'. Furthermore, most of the stem and more importantly, the spur are missing. This makes it very difficult to date it or associate with a maker (the spur would have carried the maker's stamp). It seems to have been quite fragile, with a long, tall bowl and this suggests that it was a later clay pipe, i.e. early modern.

Very worn rim sherd, probably of a vessel dating from the late Roman period, i.e. c. AD200-410. It seems to be a rim fragment from a local oxidised coarse ware vessel. All surfaces are heavily abraded. It was made from light/cream-coloured earthenware with some finer but mostly medium-sized quarzite inclusions. The rim has a small ledge curving towards the inside of the vessel. The outside is decorated with a faint, worn zig-zag pattern in the upper part and the surface of the vessel has been brushed after a slip of slightly darker cream-colour was applied.
