Ceramic vessel sherd, probably post-medieval or modern. The fabric is light orange-red and the finished product was glazed only on the inside, probably to make the vessel water proof. The outside seems to have been treated as well, being of dark red colour.

This is a socketed clay pipe bowl (socket broken off) depicting Alexander II, the Russian Czar (1818-1881). The pipe was made by Gambier, one of the best known French pipe manufacturers, who specialised in making high quality figural pipes. It was their pattern number 822 and was already in production by 1868, since it is shown in a catalogue of that year. The firm continued producing pipes until about 1920 and so this piece could have been made at any time between about 1860 and 1920. Gambier pipes are relatively common in late C19th English contexts since they were imported in large…

Bowl of clay pipe dating from the 17th century, most of the stem missing. The stem's perforation is off-centre and the small spur does not bear a maker's mark. The only decoration is rouletting around the outer rim of the small bowl. The small size of bowl and spur and the off-centre perforation suggest a date in the early 17th century.

Small vessel fragment probably dating from the Roman period, i.e. c. AD43-410. The vessel was made of skin-coloured earthenware. The fabric looks like it was tempered with small quartzite crystals and probably some organic material that got burned in the kiln, but left impressions in the fabric. The sherd probably came off a medium-sized lipped bowl.

Very small vessel fragment probably dating from the Roman or Medieval period, i.e. c. AD43-1500. The fragment is small and probably came off a simple bowl or food storage vessel. It was made from light orange/red-coloured earthenware and it was, in all likelyhood, not glazed which suggests a Roman date.

Small vessel fragment probably dating from the late medieval or early post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1400-1700. A very lovely sherd, probably from a late medieval plate. It was made from brown-glazed light-red coloured earthenware. It was decorated with a scroll or wave-motif made out of white slip before it was glazed.

Small vessel fragment probably dating from the later medieval or post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1400-1700. The vessel was made from light skin-coloured earthenware and it seems to have had a greenish or yellowish glaze on the obverse. The glaze is very worn and only the light-coloured slip between glaze and vessel body can be seen still in some places. The fabric was tempered with larger and medium-sized quartzite as the surface is quite rough to the touch. There are very worn finger marks on the inside and it is likely that this is a fragment of medieval or post-medieval bowl.

The vessel was made from light skin-coloured earthenware and it seems to have had a greenish or yellowish glaze on the obverse. The glaze is very worn and only the light-coloured slip between glaze and vessel body can be seen still in some places. The fabric must have been tempered with very fine quartzite sand as it is very soft to the touch. There are finger marks on the inside and it is likely that this is a fragment of medieval green-glazed jug.

Several small pieces of burned clay, possibly daub dating from from the prehistoric period, i.e. c. 2000BC-AD100. The material is white in colour and the fragments are very worn. It is likely that they are prehistoric, but they could date the Roman or medieval period. Unfortunately, the fragments are so small and/or worn that no impressions of the wattle (i.e. the wall material, that is sticks/branches/etc) remains on the inside.

Small vessel sherd dating from the medieval or early post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1500-1700. The sherd is of small size, but well preserved. It was made from light-colour red/orangey earthenware, but the surface is very worn and it is difficult to ascertain whether or not it had been glazed. It is, however, likely that it was. The fabric is not very fine, but it does not show many inclusions except some small larger fragment of quartzite. The sherd is somewhat similar in make and fabric to LANCUM-9898E2, but they most certainly do not come from the same vessel.

Possibly a very small floor tile fragment dating from the medieval or early post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1500-1700. It was made from dark red earthenware and none of the glaze remains. However, the fragment is tiny and very worn, so that a positive identification is very difficult.

Several small fragments of a clay pipe bowl and stem probably dating from the 18th or 19th century. The bowl was plain with no moulded ornament on the sides or along the mould 'seams'. Furthermore, most of the stem and more importantly, the spur are missing. This makes it very difficult to date it or associate with a maker (the spur would have carried the maker's stamp). It seems to have been quite fragile, with a long, tall bowl and this suggests that it was a later clay pipe, i.e. early modern.

The fragment is very worn, plan on the reverse and possibly decorated with parallel grooves on the obverse. However, it is so small and worn that it is impossible to tell what it was initially part of.

Vessel sherd probably dating from the late medieval or post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1500-1800. The sherd is very thick and sturdy, but not very well made. It was unevenly fired and even though no glaze remains on the outside, it is very likely that it was glazed. It probably belonged to a post-medieval or early modern storage vessel.

Ceramic fragment probably dating from the late medieval or post-medieval period, i.e. c. AD1500-1800. Even though it is quite thin and damaged, it may possibly have been a floor tile fragment.
