This is a socketed clay pipe bowl (socket broken off) depicting Alexander II, the Russian Czar (1818-1881). The pipe was made by Gambier, one of the best known French pipe manufacturers, who specialised in making high quality figural pipes. It was their pattern number 822 and was already in production by 1868, since it is shown in a catalogue of that year. The firm continued producing pipes until about 1920 and so this piece could have been made at any time between about 1860 and 1920. There is very worn decoration on this sherd demonstrating an egg-and-dart border below a plain band under the rim lip. Other decoration depicts a possible floral design although not clear. Decoration was facilitated through use of a mould. The fabric is pink-orange and there is a little of the red-orange slip remaining. Possibly part of Dragendorff form 37 bowl.
