Object type: BUTTON
Broad period: MODERN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Very worn button or ornamental fitting. It is circular and made from cast cu-alloy, displaying the setting for a semi-precious stone or glass centre-piece in the centre of the circle. Between and centre piece are moulded circles and dots, framing the green glass stone in the middle. Both the setting and the stone are chipped and very worn, probably not vouching for an old age but rather cheap-ish make.
It is not clear if there was an attachment loop on the reverse; there is a moulded dot in the centre of the reverse, or possibly solder residue which could have attached a loop, wire or…

19th century ferry token made from cast cu-alloy, complete except for the small suspension loop at the top which is missing.
The finder wrote to Liverpool Record Office and P Keogh got back to him offering the following additional information: "T.B. Maund and Martin Jenkins discuss ferry tickets in appendix 5 of volume 2 “Mersey Ferries”. They state that season tickets were referred to as “contracts” and were used by “middle Class” customers rather than working people. Contracts were available for 3, 6, and 12 months. Object type: COFFIN
Broad period: MODERN

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Small cast cu-alloy coffin which is composed of three different parts: casket, lid and (possibly) headplate. All three parts are held together by a small cast cu-alloy rivet at the head end of the coffin and can swivel around it on U-shaped perforations at their edges. The 'head plate' is thinner than the body and lid of the coffin and may have protected a message or similar that was wedged between the plate and the lid. If there was one, it is missing today - probably rotted away. The shape and lay-out of the coffin is late post-medieval/modern and due to its size it is more likely th…

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Cast cu-alloy seal matrix dating from the 19th or early 20th century. The seal matrix is complete except for the handle which would have been made from an organic material, most likely wood. The seal matrix's head is small and at the opposite end it has a spike that would have been driven into the wooden handle until the stop/collar in the centre of the artefact. The seal matrix itself is a small oval shield with the Union flag on (the Union flag or 'Union Jack' was adopted in 1801). On top of the shield is what looks like an officer (possibly a naval officer's?) hat and behind the sh…

Small circular cast cu-alloy weight, probably dating from the early 18th century. The weight was part of a 'nest of weights' and has a small rim around the upper surface in which a small weight would have fitted. The weight itself would have sat in the heavier weight underneath. The upper surface is stamped with a crowned 'WR' which probably means WILLIAM REX which would date the weight to the early 18th century.

A copper-alloy token dating from late the 18th or early 19th century. It is very worn and the exact date of the token can no longer be made out. However, although corroded one can see that the obverse depicts a hooded bust facing left which is meant to be a druid. The bust is surrounded by a laureate leaf design around the circumference of the coin. The reverse depicts the (very worn) scrolling letters PMC, which stands for the Parys Mine Company. Above these three letters would be the date and around this we would find the legend W[E] PROMISE TO PAY THE BEARER ONE PENNY. Furthermore, …

Cu-alloy token or counter dating from the late 18th century. The major series of these cu-alloy tokens or counters which are depicting Queen Anne appears to have been struck in Birmingham during the reign of George III. Counters of that class bear designs based on Queen Anne's shillings and sixpences: all bear the pre-Union form of shields...and show the mis-spelling 'RIG' for 'REG' which can be seen on this counter, too. Observed dates for pieces run from 1702-1774. This one is dated '1771'.

Fragment of a cast cu-alloy buckle frame dating from the early modern period, i.e. c. 18th century. It is made up of two interlaced ribbons decorated with moulded rosettes, punched cirles and oblique incised lines. Cast cu-alloy pipe tamper in the shape of 'Britannia', the personification of Great Britain, dating from the early modern period, i.e. c. late 18th or early 19th century. The female figure is draped and wears a helmet. In her left hand she holds a shield which, around the small boos, is decorated with the stripes and colours of the British flag. She probably held something - possibly a spear or sword - in her right hand, but whatever it was, it was very fragile and is broken off.
