Late or Early Post-Medieval cast silver dress-hook. It is composed of a lozenge-shaped plate cast in low relief, the outer edge showing 16 smaller circlets. There are 2-4 small knops surrounding each of the circlets (see image). The central flower which would have been attached with a rivet through the perforation in the centre is missing. Cast copper-alloy sword pommel of the hollow cast 'lobed' type. It is an elongated oval in plan (i.e. viewed from below) with two opposing faces that are subtriangular. It is semicircular in cross-section. The slot for the handle is oval. It consists of five curved lobes, all of them hollow, increasing in height towards the centre. The central lobe is very much larger than the four side lobes, and has a oval perforation, ca.5/7mm in Length, to allow it to fit over the tang of the sword. There is some damage around the perforation and some loss of surface. The perforation then flares o…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Early Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Dragonesque brooch, incomplete as the tail is missing and also the pin. A crudely made example with angular edges, unlike most others this has a reversed 'S' shape. The reverse is flat with many parallel scratch marks which probably derive from the movement of the pin. The obverse is decorated with a 'Celtic-style' moulded decoration and there are circles in relief on each 'dragon's head', mimicking an eye and a smaller nostril. Although this is probably a type of Dragonesque brooch that did not carry any enamel in the grooves and spaces, it is…

Cast lead-alloy pilgrim's souvenir or ampulla dating from the later medieval period, i.e. c. 15th-16th century. The ampulla is complete with a circular main body and a funnel/triangular-shaped neck and top. The ampulla carries moulded decoration: an elaborate fleur-de-lis on one side and a crowned (?)flower with stylised lateral foliage on the other side. Workflow stage: Published Find published
An extremely rare and important Chalcolithic tanged copper dagger dated by XREF analysis to the early Bronze Age 2400 -2,100BC. Most examples occur in early Beaker 'classic' grave assemblages associated with low-carinated Beakers, wrist guards, etc. The dagger is composed of a blade and hilt plate and there is no obvious break at the end of the hilt plate. The hilt plate would have been of organic material, probably wood, horn or antler. The blade is roughly triangular-shaped and tapers towards the tip. The edges are bevelled, but there are no signs of wear and no resharpening marks. …

A complete circular flat-cylindrical cast lead-alloy object, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval period, i.e. 1400-1600. The lead weight is flat-cylindrical in cross-section with a flat base and flattish top. It seems to have been decorated with indentations on one side only. The lead weight is basic and has suffered corrosion. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists.…

A silver seal most likely from the 16th-17th century and there is a record of arms related to the arms on it from the early 16th century. The matrix is not from Lancashire and it is curious how it turned up there. It is possible that it's deposition relates to the English Civil War 1642-1651 when men of Shropshire are known to have fought in Lancashire. The Kings army was originally based in Shrewsbury and then moved into Cheshire and then Lancashire. The Royalists recieved a defeat at Whalley which is not too far from the findspot. The ten coins range in date from AD69-79; all coins were minted under the emperor Vespasian, showing his head on the obverse. The collection was worth 20 asses, which is not an unreasonable amount to carry in a wrist-purse. Since we have no evidence of burial or of a container, it is hard to know whether these coins should be classified as a hoard or as a multiple casual loss.
