Broad period: MODERN
County: Lancashire

Small ring made from plaited silver wire. Hand-made. Rings of this type have been examined at the British Museum, where the opinion was tentatively given that they may be 19th century cane ferrules. However, possible parallels include Viking dome-shaped mounts formed of interwoven silver wire, and a ring from the 'scourge' in the ninth-century Trewhiddle hoard.

Small trade weight of cast copper alloy. Depicts inscription WIV (William 4th) beneath a crown with a possible provincial mark WK beneath. The W may indicate 'Wiltshire' but it is unclear what the K represents. William 4th reigned from 1830-1837 therefore the weight was cast in this period and follows the introduction of the 1826 'Imperial Standards' act (Bailey 2000 page 43).

Modern copper alloy general use artillery cap badge. The pressed metal openwork depicts a light field gun with inscribed swags above and below, surmounted by the King's Crown. The badge is corroded and damaged, but complete. The swags would orginaly have read UBIQUE above and below QUO FAS ET GLORIA DUCUNT. Quo Fas Et Gloria Ducunt translates from the Latin as Where Right And Glory Lead and Ubique as Everywhere. This is still the Royal Artillery motto. It was mounted on the cap or hat band by the slider clip on the rear, as opposed to a trapped pin used on some other military badges o…

Very worn button or ornamental fitting. It is circular and made from cast cu-alloy, displaying the setting for a semi-precious stone or glass centre-piece in the centre of the circle. Between and centre piece are moulded circles and dots, framing the green glass stone in the middle. Both the setting and the stone are chipped and very worn, probably not vouching for an old age but rather cheap-ish make. It is not clear if there was an attachment loop on the reverse; there is a moulded dot in the centre of the reverse, or possibly solder residue which could have attached a loop, wire or…

Maund and Martin Jenkins discuss ferry tickets in appendix 5 of volume 2 “Mersey Ferries”. They state that season tickets were referred to as “contracts” and were used by “middle Class” customers rather than working people. Contracts were available for 3, 6, and 12 months. Small cast cu-alloy coffin which is composed of three different parts: casket, lid and (possibly) headplate. All three parts are held together by a small cast cu-alloy rivet at the head end of the coffin and can swivel around it on U-shaped perforations at their edges. The 'head plate' is thinner than the body and lid of the coffin and may have protected a message or similar that was wedged between the plate and the lid. If there was one, it is missing today - probably rotted away. The shape and lay-out of the coffin is late post-medieval/modern and due to its size it is more likely th…

Three light blue/turquoise coloured beads, probably of modern date, i.e. dating from c. AD1750-1900. They are small, complete and undamaged, probably made from plastic or glass. Two of them are round, possibly of a necklace or bracelet, the other oblong. One has a larger perforation than the others, but all were made by same process. They probably have come off a piece of a child's jewellery.
