Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Published
Two amorphic piece of copper alloy slag. Found in an area with Bronze Age and Roman artefacts. The surface is characterised by lumps and hollows and has a tin element is indicated relating to bronze working. The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted. Fragments of casting waste like this one are hard to date. Scientific analysis of the elemental composition of the copper alloy would allow a more acc…

A lead alloy sub-rectangluar casting. It widens slightly from the foot to the broken end, and the foot is champhered on the rear. Also on the rear, the sides are bevelled inwards while the front is largely flat. On the front are patterns formed of stripes and a chevron, or just possibly a person walking as two of the stripes may represent feet. There seems to be a line across the top, under the break which extends across the piece horizontally. The rear too may have had a design because a stack of small horizontal lines, and a line of circles, is also visible.
In size and shape it is …

A spindle whorl made from a piece of Roman Samian ware pottery. It is slightly concave. There is no decoration, and the edges are chipped all of the way round the outside on the underside, and in a few discreet areas on the surface. The whorl may post date the Roman period as the central hole is not at the smallest end of the spectrum for a Roman date. One of very similar shape and dimensions is recorded as PUBLIC-DD674B
Dimensions: 38mm diameter and 9mm thick, the central hole is 7mm diameter and it weighs 13.79g

An incomplete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic mount or figurine of probable Roman date (c.AD 43-410). This is a casting of a bull, moulded in fine detail. The broad head is well defined, the nostrils, eyes and ears are all present. The bull has two horns curving forward and over the front of the head, which is lowered. The muscular body is well moulded. There are on the flanks of one side the remains of what may be three patches of enamel, although this is by no means certain. On one eye are the remains of red enamel or possibly the denuded remnants of a red gemstone. None of th…

Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
An incomplete possible lead alloy palm guard. It has probably been approximately circular, although much of the edge of one quarter and some of the opposite side is missing. It is very slightly domed in the centre, and in this are some marks possibly from use as a palm guard. It has a light brown colour with some sheen, except the damaged areas which are the grey of lead alloy. It is possible that this is a token rather than an unusual palm guard but there is not enough evidence to conclude.
Dimensions: Diameter is 39mm maximum and 33mm where damaged, it weighs 23.90g

A small, globular lead alloy piece, probably a weight although it could also be a gaming piece. It is flat on the bottom and the top is a shallow dome. It has a shiny, dark grey colour, except where it is damaged at the edge, when it is light brown. Similar domed weighs are known from the Viking camp site at Torksey, Lincolnshire, and it is possible that this is a similar object. See also SF-D5B50D

A sub rectangular piece of ceramic, crudely moulded. It is orange in colour with some large inclusions. It is a corner of a large, thick tile, with slightly inward sloping sides. One the top of the tile, two crossing lines have been scratched in while the clay was wet, presumably to enable adherence of plaster or similar. It is likely to be part of a hypocaust or box flue system. Found in the vicinity of Roman tile kilns and may possibly have been manufactured there, clay pits have also been identified at the site.

A lead alloy weight, probably a net weight. It has been formed by rolling a flat piece of lead alloy, possibly around a narrow diameter former, and the edge of the flap of the material can thus be seen along one side of the narrow weight. It is cylindrical in shape but wider at one end because it has been squashed. It has an even, mid brown patina.Such weights were used over a long period of time and are difficult to date. For example, LANCUM-4FF9DB is dated to the Roman period, NARC-2DF5D1 is attributed to the medieval to post medieval…

A fragment of lead alloy bar with a circular cross section. The base is flat and very slighty concave, possibly as a result of casting as opposed to design, and the edges are rounded. Near the other end a collar cast into the piece, and beyond this the bar may have been cut twice, forming a slightly triangular 'end'. This may have been for assay in some way, alternatively it could have been used as a gaming piece and the shape is to distinguish it. It has been found in association with other lead pieces and may be part of a collection which it was inte…
