Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Post Medieval copper alloy finger ring in the form of a belt, probably a 'fairing' ring. Fairing rings were cheaply made finger rings given as prizes, or sold, at rural fairs, or sold by tinkers etc. Many are found at sites traditionally associated with fairs. Some of the bands decoration has been lost to corrosion. When new, fairing rings would have been polished up and made to appear golden in colour. They vary greatly in design. Some copy older traditional designs, other decorative motifs seem to occur only on low cost copper alloy rings. Interestingly, a number of the forms…

Post Medieval lead alloy shy cock in the shape of a cockerel. The flat figurine and it's thick oval base are a single cast piece. Shy cocks seem to have been a British phenomena that were popular from the late fifteenth to the eighteenth centuries. This one is unusual as it appears to be decorated on both sides. A similar looking example is illustrated as Type 1 Design 1 in Toys, Trifles & Trinkets 1200-1800 (Forsyth, H. & Egan, G., 2005, p.240, fig.7.1). Suggested date range c1700 to c1800 AD. A copper alloy possible polyhedral weight. It is basically a cylindrical shape but is faceted unevenly on all sides. Half of the faces have a pattern of parallel lines on them. Overall it has an even green patina, the incised lines have orange soil in them. It has a sheen to it and if made of lead this would be unusual, it is suspected though because of the weight that it is a lead alloy but with a greater proportion of another metal in it, hence designation as copper alloy. The weight falls between both the Scandinavian and Dublin Viking unit weight systems. Similar weights …

A medieval silver-gilt finger ring, the bezel formed of two joined hands and the hoop undulating to simulate sleeves decorated with sprigs of foliage. Incisions on the wrists may indicate that the hands are gloved. At the back of the ring is the popular motif of a heart sprouting flowers. There is a hair-line crack across the width of the left wrist. The gilding is partially preserved, particularly in the recesses of the engraved decoration.

This neck is finished with a sub rectangular shape, slightly wider than the neck where they join. It is flat on one side, the main body is domed in the centre, the neck and rectangular end have an approximately semi-circular section. There are no distinguishing marks. Small cast cu-alloy stamp, probably dating from the late medieval or post-medieval period, ie. c. AD1500-1800. The body of the stamp is solid cast and of roughly tubular shape with an octagonal cross-section (probably for better grip). Both ends are oval/circular and display one moulded letter: a capital 'W' on one side and a capital 'E' on the other. The lettering is typical of that of some late medieval or post-medieval tokens or stamped lead items. A post-medieval date, however, seems more likely.
