Object type: SWORD
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy post medieval small or court sword or dagger pommel, dating from the late 17th to early 18th century AD. The pommel is round, with the top narrowing slightly before ending in a rounded and flattened knop. In the top centre on this is a circular hole for attachment. At the opposite end the pommel narrows, then widens to a circular collar. In the bottom of this is a square hole for attachment to the sword or dagger. The pommel has moulded raised decoration, one one side there appears to be a figure kneeling, perhaps working or wielding a sword. On …

A sub rectangular piece of ceramic, crudely moulded. It is orange in colour with some large inclusions. It is a corner of a large, thick tile, with slightly inward sloping sides. One the top of the tile, two crossing lines have been scratched in while the clay was wet, presumably to enable adherence of plaster or similar. It is likely to be part of a hypocaust or box flue system. Found in the vicinity of Roman tile kilns and may possibly have been manufactured there, clay pits have also been identified at the site. Dimensions: 98mm long and 60mm wide, it is 31mm thick and weighs …

A lead alloy weight, probably a net weight. It has been formed by rolling a flat piece of lead alloy, possibly around a narrow diameter former, and the edge of the flap of the material can thus be seen along one side of the narrow weight. It is cylindrical in shape but wider at one end because it has been squashed. It has an even, mid brown patina.Such weights were used over a long period of time and are difficult to date. For example, LANCUM-4FF9DB is dated to the Roman period, NARC-2DF5D1 is attributed to the medieval to post medieval…

A fragment of lead alloy bar with a circular cross section. The base is flat and very slighty concave, possibly as a result of casting as opposed to design, and the edges are rounded. Near the other end a collar cast into the piece, and beyond this the bar may have been cut twice, forming a slightly triangular 'end'. This may have been for assay in some way, alternatively it could have been used as a gaming piece and the shape is to distinguish it.  It has been found in association with other lead pieces and may be part of a collection which it was inte…

A copper alloy possible polyhedral weight. It is basically a cylindrical shape but is faceted unevenly on all sides. Half of the faces have a pattern of parallel lines on them. Overall it has an even white patina, and is thus probably mainly made of lead alloy. The weight fits neither the Scandinavian nor Dublin Viking unit weight systems. Similar shaped weights have been found at various sites of the Viking Great Army camps, see Hadley and Richards (2021) and British Museum accession number 2006.1203.104, dated to 9th century AD. Such shapes are also seen…

The top is also has a flat face and there may have been some faceting on the top half of the head but this is not certain. Haldenby states that the examples he examined came from the east of England (Yorkshire) and are later in the series which is dated to the 9th century AD Dimensions: It is 14mm long, the head is 10mm in diameter and weighs 3.48g

An early medieval copper alloy strap end. It is sub rectangular, curving towards the top to form a point. There is a plain frame around the edge, and inside this there is a design comprised of two elements. At the bottom is a circle enclosing a saltire, the two upper arms of the saltire extend beyond the circle to form an interlocked knot design. This is all surrounded by a border which emanates from the upper design. There is a raised dot at the point, which may have represented an eye. There are two holes, one above the saltire and one in the border on the right hand side.&…

A lead alloy conical weight or gaming piece. It is of the form of a truncated cone, with curved sides giving the appearance of a bun. There is a central, vertical oval hole, of maximum diameter 6.5mm. The bottom of the weight has an indented circular line around the hole which appears to be a feature of the mould. The weight is just under a multiple of 12 of the standard Dublin weight system of 4.43g, but with a margin of error. Such weights are numerous on the Viking site at Torksey, Lincolnshire (Hadley and Richards, 2016, Figure 1). Dimensions: 13mm high and&nbs…

A probable iron horseshoe. The toe and one branch survive. Although it may be a result of corrosion the outside edge of the shoe appears to be wavy edged. One side of the shoe is flat, the other slightly curved. The remains of round headed nails are seen in possibly two of the holes, which coincide with the shape of the rim. There are other holes, six in total,  the one at the end of the shoe being elongated, although these are now filled with corrosion products. The size and the wavy rim suggest an eary medival date for this. Dimensions: The surviving part of…
