A  copper alloy object. It is sub rectangular in shape, one of the long sides has two sloping elements which form a shallow central point, both the short sides slope outwards to the bottom. This side has an extended central area. There are two holes, one in each of the top corners. It is very thin. There is a design and possibly writing on one face but this is no longer distinguishable. It is not possible to confirm the manufacturing process although the thickness may suggest that it was pressed, and therefore, along with the lack of imagery, there is no indication of age. D…

A complete lead spindle whorl probably dating from the Iron Age or Roman period, about 100 BC - AD 410. The object is circular and flat with slightly curved sides. It has a cream pale patina. The central hole is 5.7mm in diameter. It is of Walton Rogers form B2. Dimensions: The whorl is  32.2mm in diameter, 6.5mm thick and weighs 49.5g.  Walton Rogers suggests that Form B2 whorls were used from from Iron Age to Medieval periods, but the size of the central hole makes an Iron Age or Roman date more likely.  For similar objects in PAS see, S…

A complete cast copper-alloy circular ring, probably a harness ring, dating from the Medieval to Post-medieval period, about AD 1100 - 1700. The ring is hexagonal in cross-section and has a varying width across the frame. The outer edge is worn. The object has a dark green patina. A scar on one part of the frame may suggest the ring once had a pin and have been used as a buckle. Dimensions: The object is 27.0mm in external diameter, has an internal diameter of of 17.3mm and is 3.1mm thick. It weighs 4.48g Geake suggests that though the function of rings like …

Unusual lead alloy mount of unknown date and period it appears to be in the form a medal decorated with a swastika. The stamped cross is more consistent with a later Medieval style, suggesting it dates to the 12th to 16th Centuries AD. The pendant is a mid grey in colour, with an even surface patina. A direct parallel for this find has not been located at the time of recording. The swastika, the 'crux gammatica' (a cross formed from 4 Greek capital gamma characters) was widely used long before the Christian period, possibly in pagan religious contexts. It did however continu…

Treasure tracking no. 2020 T56 The fragment was thought at first inspection to be two silver coins of an unclear date that had been fused / melted together. The presence of identifying detail was uncertain and it was requested to be brought to the British Museum for further examination, where it was received in December 2021. Description: The object is not clearly identifiable but does not appear to be two coins. It is a fragment of a metal object that has broken on one edge and shows slight lamination in the break. Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Unidentified copper alloy object, possibly a Romano British brooch fragment or a Post Medieval firearm trigger element. The object is mis-shapen due to being heat effected or concreted or miscast. Overall form and dimensions are suggestive of a Romano British brooch though the lower projection is possibly a little thick for a brooch bow or catchplate. There is also a resemblance to basic firearm triggers and the orientation is correct though the section above could be seen to be too 'chunky'. If it is a firearm trigger it is likely to predate the common usage of percussion ammunition.…

Undateable gold or yellow metal object, probably metal working waste, possibly Early Medieval bullion. It is sub-circular in plan and oval in cross-section. The globular form is undiagnostic, and it is therefore not possible to date with any degree of certainty. The weight is quite close to that of a half-ertog or eyrir (4 or 4.26g), but not sufficiently close to justify a firm date, especially since the object does not appear to be a finished item, which means the weight may not be significant on any weight standard. Metal working melts are known from the Viking Age, but the artefact…

A probable piece of cast copper alloy waste; a casting well of unknown date. The remnant would have been from the funnel shaped neck of a mould. Consequently, the waste itself is funnel shaped, sub-conical, with an oval, uneven top surface, and tapering towards a broken runner or sprue 'foot'. There is a second runner, perhaps leading to the next mould, projecting to the side. The object is 22.7mm long, 9.7mm high, 16.8mm wide and weighs 7g. It has a grey green patina. For a similar, although lead alloy, example see HESH-CFC988. A number of these objects have been dated to the B…

Stone ring found in the River Ribble by a metal detector user, but as an 'eyes only' find. The finder describes the river as being particularly low at the time of his discovery due to hot weather. The tint and location could both suggest the object to be of Limestone. He kindly supplies oblique and direct images [used to compile the accompanying composite view] and the following notes on dimensions: 'It weighs 65 grams and has a circumference of 73mm. The outer wall measures 21mm at its widest by 12mm at its thickest point'. Armlets of jet and shale are known particularly from Ear…

Object type: BUCKET
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An assemblage of eleven copper alloy band or strap fragments, possibly from a stave built bucket. From the fragments it has been possible to adduce that at least some of the straps were originally 66mm wide, attached by rivets of pegs through perforations approximately 3mm in diameter, and probably originally reactangular in plan. There are no diagnostic features that can allow a reliable dating. The fragments could date to anytime from the Bronze Age to the Post Medieval. Suggested date range c2350 BC to c1850 AD Total weight of fragments is 68.23g.

Lead or lead alloy fragment of an unknown date, possibly casting waste or a partially melted or miscast object. It does appears to have deliberately cast holes, similar to the openwork style, and possible ring and dot decoration. Its original intended purpose is unknown but if it isn't casting waste it could be part of a Late Early Medieval to early Medieval strap-end of Thomas's Class E, similar to LANCUM-2409F1 but cast in lead. Other lead alloy strap ends of the period on the database include NMS-82ED04, NLM-890976, and NMS-45E545. It may have been be a failed lead mold former asso…

A lead alloy pyramidal standing weight of unknown date, about AD 43 - 1800. The weight has a rounded square base, and flat triangular sides, tapering to a blunt point at the apex. There is a rectangular hole through the top of the weight. The base is concave, caused by the lead shrinking as it cooled after casting. There are no obvious marks or decoration, but there are some grains of quartz embedded in the lead. Height 60.5mm, width 36.4mm, thickness 33mm. Weight 292g. This mass does not fit easily into any known system of measurement. It may have been a weight for a specific pu…

Copper-alloy pendant in the form of a winged erect phallus of uncertain date (c. AD 43 - 1800). The shaft of the phallus curves slightly upwards and widens from a pair of wings above a pair of testicles. There is a suspension loop between the wings, which is pierced slightly off-centre. The object is detailed in its design: transverse grooves on the front of the wings give the impression of feathers and a pair of parallel grooves run along the bottom of the shaft, the head of which is picked out by curved parallel grooves across the top and sides. Lead spindle whorl of uncertain date within the period c. AD 43 - 1800. The spindle whorl is broadly oval in shape, with a flat bottom face and a convex upper face of uneven thickness. It has a central, circular perforation. The object has a white patina. It is 41.46mm in diameter, 12.39mm in thickness and weighs 73.68g. The diameter of the central perforation is 11.28mm. Lead spindle whorls can be difficult to date without archaeological context as a similar form was used from the Roman period to the modern day. This is especially the case for crudely-formed examples such as this one.
