Cast lead alloy token dating from the medieval or post-medieval, possibly the 15th-17th century AD. It is a circular uniface lead token with a plain reverse and a possibly inscribed obverse. The obverse is divided by a long cross into four quarters and there is a symbol or letter in each quarter. Depending on whether the X can be read as the letter X or the initial cross (+), two variants can be suggested: WPAX or +WPA. Prof. Elisabeth Okasha suggests that there are two likely possibilities. Either it reads PX (for PAX 'Peace') and AW (for alpha and omega), or it reads PAX and the …

Almost complete cast cu-alloy two-part trebuchet or tumbrel-type folding coin balance dating from the medieval period, i.e. c. AD1200-1500. This type of balance for weighing individual coins was formed from two arms, which pivot in the middle allowing the balance to be opened into a cross shape to be used, or folded flat for storage (see attached image). The (when unfolded) horizontal arm included an integral pan and a (probably) acorn-shaped integral weight, now missing. Both this arm and the wider one which contains the hinge are decorated with thick, stepped criss-cross transverse …

Head of a copper alloy 8th century Anglo-Saxon pin, probably part of a triple, or double, pin set. The head and part of the shank survive in very good condition with hardly any corrosion or bronze disease present on the surface, except in the centre of the obverse where corrosion started in the crevices of the decoration. It was made from cast copper alloy, probably with part-incised decoration on the obverse. The silvery shine on the reverse strongly suggests that the pin had been silvered or tinned. There is a small hole in the side of the head, possibly to link the pin to the centr…

Cast copper alloy socketed axe dating from the Late Bronze Age, that is c. 1000-800BC. The axe is complete and in good condition except for the missing loop and misshaped mouth which are, however, casting flaws and not signs of prehistoric damage. The exception is the tear in the side wall which may have happened when the handle was inserted and the implement was used. It looks as if it has been used: the casting seams are smooth and the blade was shaped and sharpened. The blade is crescent-shaped with neat corners. The patina is brown/orange with a smooth surface. The axe is undecora…

An extremely rare and important Chalcolithic tanged copper dagger dated by XREF analysis to the early Bronze Age 2400 -2,100BC. Most examples occur in early Beaker 'classic' grave assemblages associated with low-carinated Beakers, wrist guards, etc. The dagger is composed of a blade and hilt plate and there is no obvious break at the end of the hilt plate. The hilt plate would have been of organic material, probably wood, horn or antler. The blade is roughly triangular-shaped and tapers towards the tip. The edges are bevelled, but there are no signs of wear and no resharpening marks. …
