Post Medieval copper alloy finger ring in the form of a belt, probably a 'fairing' ring. Fairing rings were cheaply made finger rings given as prizes, or sold, at rural fairs, or sold by tinkers etc. Many are found at sites traditionally associated with fairs. Some of the bands decoration has been lost to corrosion. When new, fairing rings would have been polished up and made to appear golden in colour. They vary greatly in design. Some copy older traditional designs, other decorative motifs seem to occur only on low cost copper alloy rings. Interestingly, a number of the forms…

Small cast cu-alloy stamp, probably dating from the late medieval or post-medieval period, ie. c. AD1500-1800. The body of the stamp is solid cast and of roughly tubular shape with an octagonal cross-section (probably for better grip). Both ends are oval/circular and display one moulded letter: a capital 'W' on one side and a capital 'E' on the other. A lead alloy cup of uncertain function. It is circular with a slightly rounded base, with reasonably thin walls. The rim is slightly everted. One side has a split extending most of the way from the rim to the base. There is no material in it which probably suggests that it was a cup rather then a crucible, although some items like this have been listed on the database as bird feeders, see for example https://finds.org.uk/database/artefacts/record/id/1047543. As no function is identified, a wide date range has been allocated.

A lead alloy artefact which may be a part formed spindle whorl or gaming piece. It is circular with a central hole. One side is flat with a central depression running around it, leaving the inner and outer edges raised. The other side has three 'globules' raised above the base, leaving one flat area, the globules and flat part all covering approximately a quarter of the diameter. It has an even brown patina. While the shape and central hole are characteristics of spindle whorls, they are also found on Viking lead alloy turreted gaming pieces. As it is a miscast p…

Cast cu-alloy ring, probably prehistoric or Roman and dating from c. 1000BC (Late Bronze Age) to AD410. The ring has a diameter of 29.22cm and an oval cross-section. The surface of the ring is very smooth to the touch, hardly tarnished and it was undecoration. It is unlikely, however, that it was a finger ring, and more likely that it was part of horse harness. The inside of the ring is very smooth suggesting a leather strap attachment rather than a metal chain.

The edge of the piece is fluted, a line runs just inside the edge and the chevrons cross this line to add to the decorative effect at the edge. A section of what is probably a knee or trumpet type early Roman brooch. The head is circular and behind it are the remains of the fixing plate for the spring. This is a raised rectangular section which fills the full diameter of the head and would have extended perhaps 3mm or 4mm upright. The remains of this have a worn curve in the centre which would have formed a fixing hole when complete. From the front of this head a circular section piece extends which has a central rib down the length of it. This curves at approximately 75 degrees, sloping down from the head, then vert…

A copper alloy and enamel lozengeiform brooch of the Roman period, 1st to 2nd centuries AD. It is diamond shaped, with the longer axis being horizontal. In the centre is a number of cells which form first another rhomboid, which is inlaid with blue enamel (intact) and inside this are four smaller diameter circles. The outer circles are inlaid with white enamel, which survives, the inner circles do not have enamel in them, and may alternatively have contained gem stones, it is not possible to confirm this. The outer frame is again a lozenge shaped, div…

A cylindrical metal alloy bar with a pattern at either end. The pattern consists of a 'marigold' shape of eight equally spaced pointed petals. These are seen on bracelet terminals (Youngs, S. The Work of Angels, 25 and 26 page 44) of the early medieval period as well as on carved stone crosses and in manuscripts (but these are usually six pointed, not eight as is this example. The alloy, probably of copper, is particularly dense and this may have been a stamp used to pattern leather or similar, although it could equally be a gaming piece or weight, alt…

In the middle of the triangles is a vertical line with a know at the top of it. The design in the bottom half is made of long, vertical parallel lines. It is possible that this is a representation of a bearded face, but this in only conjecture. It is delaminated and has brown staining on it. A copper alloy object. It is sub rectangular in shape, one of the long sides has two sloping elements which form a shallow central point, both the short sides slope outwards to the bottom. This side has an extended central area. There are two holes, one in each of the top corners. It is very thin. There is a design and possibly writing on one face but this is no longer distinguishable. It is not possible to confirm the manufacturing process although the thickness may suggest that it was pressed, and therefore, along with the lack of imagery, there is no indication of age.

A probable copper alloy strap end. It has a square body, which is split into two pieces to accomodate the strap. Formed as one part, the end of the piece has a decoration with two horizontal arms, as wide as the body, and a third protrusion vertically up from the centre of these arms, forming a cross head shape. The arms are all rounded at the end. Between the split portion are iron remains, and possibly some other, organic remains. It is probably incomplete as the rivet fixing is not present, and the end is an an angle, possibly where it has been cut off. A similar object is LIN-…

A possible lead alloy weight or gaming piece. It is irregular in shape, being triangular at the bottom but with a circular top half. The base is also not straight and is 'kinked' halfway along, although this may be as a result of damage and not deliberate. It is flat on the front and back faces. The base is not smooth but has what may be symbols etched into it. It is difficult to discern if all of these are damage or deliberate but the horseshoe shaped symbol is obviously deliberate, the possible rune next to it is not so clear-cut. It is exceptionally large and heavy…

An iron token or weight which has possibly been converted to a gaming piece. If formerly a weight it would approximate to 1/2 ounce, but account must be taken of metal lost through corrosion. It is badly corroded but on both sides a symbol has been scratched into the surface post manufacture, which consists of two triangles joined in line with each other at the point. Rust is evident on both faces
