A complete copper alloy trade weight, one of a set that would have stacked. It is circular with a raised rim, and the weight would suggest that it is 1/2 ounce. Inside are the stamps of a laver or coffee pot, the inspection mark of the Worshipful Company of Founders, who controlled the lawful making of weights in London and for three miles around (Withers and Withers 2011, page 78). Also a sword, which is the mark of St Pauls London, and possibly a crowned C, which would date the weight to the reign of Charles 1-11. Similar example on the database are NARC-C1DECA and DEV…

A copper alloy possible polyhedral weight. It is basically a cylindrical shape but is faceted unevenly on all sides. Half of the faces have a pattern of parallel lines on them. Overall it has an even green patina, the incised lines have orange soil in them. It has a sheen to it and if made of lead this would be unusual, it is suspected though because of the weight that it is a lead alloy but with a greater proportion of another metal in it, hence designation as copper alloy. The weight falls between both the Scandinavian and Dublin Viking unit weight systems. Similar weights …

A possible lead alloy weight or gaming piece. It is irregular in shape, being triangular at the bottom but with a circular top half. The base is also not straight and is 'kinked' halfway along, although this may be as a result of damage and not deliberate. It is flat on the front and back faces. The base is not smooth but has what may be symbols etched into it. It is difficult to discern if all of these are damage or deliberate but the horseshoe shaped symbol is obviously deliberate, the possible rune next to it is not so clear-cut. The base is flat and very slighty concave, possibly as a result of casting as opposed to design, and the edges are rounded. Near the other end a collar cast into the piece, and beyond this the bar may have been cut twice, forming a slightly triangular 'end'. A lead alloy weight, or possible spindle whorl or gaming piece. It is circular in form with a central hole of 9mm diameter. It is flat on both sides. Such weights were possibly net weights and are dated in the database to AD 1200-1800, for example NARC-DE4CD1, although they have been found on much earlier sites, such as the Viking camp at Torksey, Lincolnshire (Hadley and Richards 2016, Fig 1) Dimensions: It is 28mm in diameter and 6mm thick, the central hole is 9mm diameter. It weighs 33.96g

A lead alloy weight, probably a net weight. It has been formed by rolling a circular flat piece of lead alloy, possibly around a narrow diameter former, and the arc shaped flap of the material can thus be seen along one side of the narrow weight. It is cylindrical in shape but wider in the centre than the ends, because of the circular plate from which it is made. There are assay marks but they make little sense, one is 7.8 and the other possibly 7.B, and may be part of the users personal cipher. The central, circular assay mark is too denuded to interpret. Weights with simple designs are very easy to make and continued in use for a long period. They have a huge range of designs which were not necessarily related to function and could have been used for various purposes such as counting, gaming or possibly even as …

A lead alloy pyramidal standing weight of unknown date, about AD 43 - 1800. The weight has a rounded square base, and flat triangular sides, tapering to a blunt point at the apex. There is a rectangular hole through the top of the weight. The base is concave, caused by the lead shrinking as it cooled after casting. There are no obvious marks or decoration, but there are some grains of quartz embedded in the lead. Height 60.5mm, width 36.4mm, thickness 33mm. Weight 292g. This mass does not fit easily into any known system of measurement. It may have been a weight for a specific pu…

Roman to Post Medieval lead or lead alloy suspended weight, possibly a steelyard weight or a replacement pendulum weight. It is sub-pyramidal in form. The apex of the 'pyramid' contains two perforations in the lead which would have been used to suspend the weight. One of the perforations appears to have either failed or been poorly executed. There are remains of a chalky coating on the weight. It is hard to tell if this is intentional or the result of being interred in a lime rich medium like mortar, possibly lost and trapped in a wall.
