A complete gold posy ring. It has a shallow d shaped section, being flat inside. The outside of the band is plain, on the inside is inscribed 'The hope i had was allmost loste'. This is in English, in lower case italic script. Thre is no makers mark or hallmark. Rings such as these were popular tokens of affection, being inscribed so that only the wearer knew of the inscription. This one is a little poignant and a less straightforward declaration of love than is often found. The change to italic script from Roman capitals occurred towards the end of the seve…

Decorated with floral and circular motifs around the exterior, with a frame at the top and bottom edge. A gold ring with an image of the Virgin and Child etched onto the bezel. The ring has a flat oval bezel with a raised frame around it cast in. Within the bezel is an image, formed by casting and incising (?) of the Virgin and child. The child has a halo and is swaddled. The Virgin is crowned and holds the baby on her right hand side. This image and the bezel runs across the finger. The shoulders of the ring are also decorated, with a loop lower down which progresses with a pattern reminiscent of basket weave that runs up to and frames the bezel. This pattern could alternative…

Bracelet 1 A complete and well crafted penannular bracelet with a band of thin, ‘C’ section. The section is, however, thickest at the centre, thinner, rounded and highly polished along the edges. The band tapers gently towards the squared off terminals, which are defined by a narrow beading created by turning the metal outward slightly. The bracelet has many dents and scratches visible under magnification. Slight compression of the band around the middle has caused limited distortion and misalignment of the terminals. Undateable gold or yellow metal object, probably metal working waste, possibly Early Medieval bullion. It is sub-circular in plan and oval in cross-section. The globular form is undiagnostic, and it is therefore not possible to date with any degree of certainty. The weight is quite close to that of a half-ertog or eyrir (4 or 4.26g), but not sufficiently close to justify a firm date, especially since the object does not appear to be a finished item, which means the weight may not be significant on any weight standard. Metal working melts are known from the Viking Age, but the artefact…

It is a cufflink disc and would originally have held a faceted piece of glass, paste, or semi precious stone, in the claw setting. The damage to the bowl of the fragment suggests it was removed forcibly from its original position, suggesting a cuff link or finger ring rather than a button. The claw setting and overall shape typical of the later Post Medieval, though a close parallel in gold has not been found on the database yet. Probably dates to between c1730 and c1850 AD. Length 10…

A small fragment of gold, dished and decorated on the outside of the curve, possibly broken from some kind of vessel. The decoration appears to be a plant design, of probable late medieval date. The inner side is undecorated. The exact character of the object is uncertain. There is no reason to doubt that this object meets the 10% threshold required by the Treasure Act, or that it is more than 300 years old.
