Mid to Late Bronze Age casting gate or jets. The object consists of two conical sprues or flashes with a casting well that is a figure '8' in plan. Casting jets, such as this, are waste products which form at the top of a two-piece clay mould when the molten metal has filled the object-shaped void below and around the gate piece which had two conical apertures. These sorts wsate material are made uo of re-usable metal, and would have been retained for resmelting. They turn up in base metal hoards of the period and later Suggested date range c1500 to c800 BC, probably after c1000…

Two pieces of a lead alloy object. It is triangular in overall form The front is decorated with two chevrons, which broaden near the top. The edge of the piece is fluted, a line runs just inside the edge and the chevrons cross this line to add to the decorative effect at the edge. There is a fainter central line running vertically between the two chevrons in the centre of the piece. The rear is also decorated. Along the edge is a line of ring and dot decoration. Inside this are two lines of interlaced circles, forming a double chain effect. There are also groups of …

A section of what is probably a knee or trumpet type early Roman brooch. The head is circular and behind it are the remains of the fixing plate for the spring. This is a raised rectangular section which fills the full diameter of the head and would have extended perhaps 3mm or 4mm upright. The remains of this have a worn curve in the centre which would have formed a fixing hole when complete. From the front of this head a circular section piece extends which has a central rib down the length of it. This curves at approximately 75 degrees, sloping down from the head, then vert…

A copper alloy and enamel lozengeiform brooch of the Roman period, 1st to 2nd centuries AD. It is diamond shaped, with the longer axis being horizontal. In the centre is a number of cells which form first another rhomboid, which is inlaid with blue enamel (intact) and inside this are four smaller diameter circles. The outer circles are inlaid with white enamel, which survives, the inner circles do not have enamel in them, and may alternatively have contained gem stones, it is not possible to confirm this. The outer frame is again a lozenge shaped, div…

A cylindrical metal alloy bar with a pattern at either end. The pattern consists of a 'marigold' shape of eight equally spaced pointed petals. These are seen on bracelet terminals (Youngs, S. The Work of Angels, 25 and 26 page 44) of the early medieval period as well as on carved stone crosses and in manuscripts (but these are usually six pointed, not eight as is this example. The alloy, probably of copper,  is particularly dense and this may have been a stamp used to pattern leather or similar, although it could equally be a gaming piece or weight, alt…

In the middle of the triangles is a vertical line with a know at the top of it. The design in the bottom half is made of long, vertical parallel lines. It is possible that this is a representation of a bearded face, but this in only conjecture. It is delaminated and has brown staining on it. A  copper alloy object. It is sub rectangular in shape, one of the long sides has two sloping elements which form a shallow central point, both the short sides slope outwards to the bottom. This side has an extended central area. There are two holes, one in each of the top corners. It is very thin. There is a design and possibly writing on one face but this is no longer distinguishable. It is not possible to confirm the manufacturing process although the thickness may suggest that it was pressed, and therefore, along with the lack of imagery, there is no indication of age. D…

Formed as one part, the end of the piece has a decoration with two horizontal arms, as wide as the body, and a third protrusion vertically up from the centre of these arms, forming a cross head shape. The arms are all rounded at the end. Between the split portion are iron remains, and possibly some other, organic remains. A possible lead alloy weight or gaming piece. It is irregular in shape, being triangular at the bottom but with a circular top half. The base is also not straight and is 'kinked' halfway along, although this may be as a result of damage and not deliberate. It is flat on the front and back faces. The base is not smooth but has what may be symbols etched into it. It is difficult to discern if all of these are damage or deliberate but the horseshoe shaped symbol is obviously deliberate, the possible rune next to it is not so clear-cut. It is exceptionally large and heavy…

An iron token or weight which has possibly been converted to a gaming piece. If formerly a weight it would approximate to 1/2 ounce, but account must be taken of metal lost through corrosion. It is badly corroded but on both sides a symbol has been scratched into the surface post manufacture, which consists of two triangles joined in line with each other at the point. Rust is evident on both faces Dimensions: It is diameter 28.4mm and 2.48mm thick, it weighs 12.5g

The surface is characterised by lumps and hollows and has a tin element is indicated relating to bronze working. The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted. Fragments of casting waste like this one are hard to date. Scientific analysis of the elemental composition of the copper alloy would allow a more acc…
