Thirty five complete lead musket balls or shot dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1600-1700), found in close proximity to each other. Twenty five were found in one area, with a further ten 10m away in an adjacent field. They look freshly cast with indentations were the sprue may have been removed as opposed to a 'proud' sprue mark. Most of spherical and complete, but two are distorted, and this is probably as a result of miscasting, versus use. All the musket balls are a mid to light grey colour, with an even surface patina. There are also two p…

Perhaps a Civil War lead alloy musket ball dating to 1642 - 1651 AD. The bore is quite small and may well belong to a pistol. In this period lots of weapons were purchased on the continent of all shapes and sizes and the balls would be cast by the weapons user. The diameter is 12mm.

Dates to between c1600 and c1800 AD. Diameter approximately 22mm and weight 42.25g.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot or ball. Probably unused or spent. It has been modified by chewing. Though the chewing could remove mass from the ball, it was still done as the chewing caused greater damage to it's intended target. Modern bullets with hollow points are manufactured for a similar reason. Diameter approximately 10mm and weight 5.33g. Probably dating to between c1600 and c1900 AD.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot assemblage of 11 balls. All the shot has been flattened as a result of direct impact with a hard surface, probably stone. There are lines on four of the bits of shot that may be remnant casting seams, or impressions of the objects they struck. Probably dating to between c1600 and c1900 AD. Diameters 15mm to 19mm, weights 2.4g to 3.4g, and total assemblage weight 33.49g.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot assemblage of 41 balls. Mostly unused or spent. Some miscast and some demonstrating probable light impact damage. Found in conjunction with LANCUM-93AEC9, LANCUM-93BB48, and others, suggesting that the area was probably a popular site for either attempting to shoot wildfowl, or for casting the shot. A good number of lead and lead alloy weights were found in the area too. Very few of the lead and lead alloy objects found in the vicinity showed much in the way of abrasion and many retained casting nipples and seams. Probably dating to between …
