A lead alloy gaming piece, spindle whorl or possibly weight. It is a moulded circular disc, with four raised turrets at roughly even spaces around the flat top of this. Three of these turrets are worn down to short stumps, but one survives, although it is bent over. The base is flat. In the centre of the disc is a circular hole. There is either a style line or a join running around the circumference of the base, roughly halfway up its depth. It has an even white patina. This is a curious object and could be a thin spindle whorl that has had anther piece added, onto which the t…

A lead alloy, miscast and therefore unfinished, spindle whorl. One, conical side of the spindle whorl is alomost complete, with a design of concentric circles of dots, and the central hole is moulded cleanly in to a depth. The other side is flat, with a vague suggestion of a line and dot pattern in it. There is no central hole apparent on this side. It may have been destined to have been of Walton-Rogers form C. Off the side of this is a lump of lead from a faulty casting. It is interesting to see a piece as work in progress on a local site. Dimensions (approximate): 28mm diameter and…

Cast lead-alloy pilgrim's ampulla decorated with a scallop shell. It has two small handles for suspension on either side of the neck and the shell-shaped body is widely splayed. Lead alloy medallion or token reused as a dress or curtain weight. The lead alloy disc is pierced with two holes in the centre, but there is bold script around the edge. It reads JUBILEE and 1809. This was the year of the golden jubilee of George III and it is possible that this was a commemorative medal made for this occasion. On the other side of the medal is an image of a book and possibly of a cross, this might suggest that it was either a locallly made token for the kings jubilee or, more plausibly, a token made to commemorate the anniversay of a local church or similar organ…

A lead alloy pendant or medallion. A cast, square shape with rounded corners, into the centre of which is moulded a circle, approximately 3mm from the edge of the square. On what is presumed to be the front of the medallion, a ladies face is apparent in profile, at 45 degrees across the circle. She has her hair curled and held up, and wears a tiara of some sort on the front of her head. She seems to be quiet a young woman and it is therefore possible that this has been cast as a commemoration fo Queen Victoria's coronation, although there is no wording to support this. Alterna…

Lead alloy pendant in the form of an elephant. This is a well defined moulding of an elephant, with tusks, bulging eyes and four feet in a line (as opposed to running or other action), although it is difficult to discern the ears. There is the remains of what might have been a suspension loop on the back, but it might alternatively have been further decoration or feature, such as a howdah. Most examples on the database are dated as Post-modern or modern, but Roman coins also depict elephants. In its stance this example resembles most those on the coins (see NARC-6B1494 or DENO-F16…

On the reverse is a coronation scene with the Queen sitting in the coronation chair while the crown in placed on her head by the Archbishop, she has attendants and others around her.
