One half of a lead alloy cloth seal. On one side letters around the circumference are possibly 'R A B', with G.E.R. across the centre. This is surrounded by a dotted border. On the other the figure '3' with another character or characters next to it (possibly oz?) is present in a box, and underneath in another box is 'VII'. Lead alloy alnage seal used for bags of cloth from the Post-Medieval period 1700 - 1900AD. It is made from two circles attached by a thin strip, then folded over in half. The seal appears to depict a light infantry regiment and may relate to military goods. Alnage, or aulnage (from Fr. aune, ell) is the official supervision of the shape and quality of manufactured woollen cloth. In the reign of Edward I an official called an "alnager" was appointed to enforce it. His duty was to measure each piece of cloth, and to affix a stamp to show that it was of the necessary size and quality. …

An incomplete post-Medieval lead alloy two-disc cloth seal (c. 1500-c. 1650). The seal is formed by two circular discs, one with a hole in the centre and the other with a stud protruding. These discs are joined by an integral connecting strip which is folded in half so the discs over-lay each other, and the stud protrudes through the hole. The remaining disc represented here depicts a crown above portcullis design on the face, which was a popular image on cloth seals throughout the 16th century in particular. Only one disc of the seal remains; it displayed a heart and cross (or the letter F) with pellet decoration and a small trefoil on either side.
