Post Medieval copper alloy 'Pineapple Penny' token of Barbados. On the obverse there is an African's head facing left and wearing a crown with Prince of Wales plumes. On the reverse is a drop shaped pineapple. These 'pennies' were not official currency, but said to be an anti-slavery campaign token commissioned by Sir Philip Gibbes (1731 - 1815). Olaudah Equiano (c1745 - 1797), a freedman, writer, and abolitionist, regarded Gibbes as "the most worthy and humane gentleman" (Gautier, G Slavery and the Fashioning of Race in Oroonoko, Robin…

Two amorphic piece of copper alloy slag. Found in an area with Bronze Age and Roman artefacts. The surface is characterised by lumps and hollows and has a tin element is indicated relating to bronze working. The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted. Fragments of casting waste like this one are hard to date. Scientific analysis of the elemental composition of the copper alloy would allow a more acc…

It is circular in plan, the inner face is shallowly convex and the engraved outer face is slightly concave. The crudely incised engraving on the outer face presumably depicts the Lamb of God within a circumferal border. The outer face appears 'washed' with a brassy yellow finish, probably gold or a gold alloy. There is also some of this gold coating around the circumference of the rear face. In places there are the remnants of rolled edge on the rear face. …
