Object type: WEIGHT
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A complete copper alloy trade weight, one of a set that would have stacked. It is circular with a raised rim, and the weight would suggest that it is 1/2 ounce. Inside are the stamps of a laver or coffee pot, the inspection mark of the Worshipful Company of Founders, who controlled the lawful making of weights in London and for three miles around (Withers and Withers 2011, page 78). Also a sword, which is the mark of St Pauls London, and possibly a crowned C, which would date the weight to the reign of Charles 1-11. Similar example on the database are NARC-C1DECA and DEV…

Object type: CHAIN
Broad period: MODERN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small chain comprising two silver links. Both links are square in plan. One is a slight D section, and plain, and both ends have been cut unevenly. It may be that this is not a link but a remnant of silver which has been bent into shape to loop with the other. The second link is joined and it is difficult to see where this join is, which makes the first link all the more likely not to be part of the original chain. This second link is highly decorated, with a wave and dot pattern on a background of parallel lines, running perpendicular to the edges of the link. This link has wea…

Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A Roman copper alloy finger ring. The ring is in poor condition, and is no longer circular as the shank has been broken and flattened in antiquity. The bezel survives and is decorated with a 'bullseye' pattern typical of the period. The outer ring has red enamel remaining, the next circular cell has no enamel. Then a further cell contains what would have been white or yellow enamel and the centre is again empty, but was likely to have been enamelled also. It is of Daubney's Group 4 Similar examples are YORYM-62A6EE, SWYOR-1B980F and SOM-9D58C5. The latter ex…
