Object type: TOKEN
Broad period: POST MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
Two worn copper alloy farming tokens. One shows a horse (or possibly a deer) standing, facing left, the obverse is too degraded to interpret. This is 15mm diameter. The second is slightly smaller at 13mm diameter. It shows either a set of loaded scales or a cross with heads below, depending on which way up it is held. The obverse may show a robed figure, although again it is degraded. This possible religious imagery may suggest that it is a church token or souvenir, rather than trade one. Tokens were popular methods of payment in the 17th to 19th centuries AD.

A circular weight, worn and unmarked. It is circular in plan and has a raised circular edge on the upper side. There are assay marks but they make little sense, one is 7.8 and the other possibly 7.B, and may be part of the users personal cipher. The central, circular assay mark is too denuded to interpret. It is plain on the back. A weight of 10.85g would suggest that it was to represent 1/3oz. The weight has brown patina. Similar but not identical weights with a raised border are described in Withers (2011,41) and there are examples of thi…

A lead alloy artefact that is probably an inkwell. It is a hollow cube in shape, the four sides are plain, as is the square base. In the open top, a three sided flat piece of lead has been inserted, forming a top with a smaller square opening in it. This has been fixed in place possibly with molten lead. One side has a deep scratch across it, another has a semi-circular piece missing for the base. Posy rings were used as love tokens, with the inscription remaining secret to all but the wearer. Possible parallels for the intricate exterior decoration with top and bottom frame are seen in OXON-FBF56A and LEIC-1ADEDD. There is no record …

A lead alloy finger ring. The band is flat in section, and widens out gradually to form an oval shaped bezel. This in turn is is pyramidal, coming to a soft point in the centre. This point forms the middle of a flower, around which are impressed eight circular petals, spaced at regular intervals. It has an even grey patina, in the petals there is a brown residue which may be the remains of a colouring of some sort. Althpugh the shape may indicate a Roman period firn, the decoration and material would suggest that it is likely to be a more modern trinket ring, see for example NLM-A…

A large section of an Iron Age- early Roman period terret ring of simple type. It is moulded in one piece from copper alloy and has a circular cross section. This narrows slightly towards the top. A silver service medal from World War 1, awarded to Pte. Nicholas Farnworth, 24391, which is inscribed on the rim of the medal. This silver medal was awarded to officers and men of the British and Imperial Forces who either entered a theatre of war (an area of active fighting) or served overseas (perhaps as a garrison soldier) between 5 August 1914 and 11 November 1918 inclusive. The ribbon would have had a central band of orange edged with white, black and blue lines and although many other medal ribbons symbolise something, it seems that the colour and pattern of the British War…

Medieval to Post Medieval silver disc, probably an element of a composite pendant reliquary. It is circular in plan, the inner face is shallowly convex and the engraved outer face is slightly concave. The crudely incised engraving on the outer face presumably depicts the Lamb of God within a circumferal border. The outer face appears 'washed' with a brassy yellow finish, probably gold or a gold alloy. There is also some of this gold coating around the circumference of the rear face. In places there are the remnants of rolled edge on the rear face. …
