A dark grey hawking whistle most likely made from tin alloy. Cylindrical in shape with a tapering end and broken extension piece, possibly for an attachment loop. A thin raised ring at the top seperates the body of the whistle from the mouth-piece. Immediately below this upper ring is the semi-circular aperture which allows the sound to escape. The object is mostly intact although here is damage to the end of the mouthpiece, and some distortion of shape from erosion processes. Roman to Modern cigar shaped whetstone. The finder's partner is a qualified geologist and says the sharpening stone is made from a "Fine to medium grained, quartz cemented sandstone, probably local millstone grit but its source location in the Bowland stratigraphic sequence is not known. The visible striations are not natural." Falttened areas or facets are typical of stones that have been well used. The tapered elongated cylindrical shape is typical of those used for sharpening scythes and sickles. Similar stones in modern materials are still in production (see attached image). Sickl…

A lead weight spindle whorl (or possibly net sinker or trap weight) of conical shape. The spindle whorl is 29mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 9mm in diameter. If decorated, the decoration is hard to make out: it probably consisted of random lines in relief on the diagonal surface. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 41.47 grams…

Small late 8th/early 9th century Viking lead weight into which has been inserted a piece of Irish, Scottish or Pictish metalwork of an 'Insular Art' style. While the weight itself was made from cast lead, the piece of inserted metalwork was made from cast cu-alloy which was subsequently gilded (small fragments of gilding remain in the grooves of the carved decoration). The decoration of the cu-alloy inlaid piece is fragmentary and seems to have been part of an ornamental interlacing, probably floral scrollwork border with a thinner, hatched border underneath.

Copper-alloy swivel with oval loop. The loop has an integral rivet- or nail-shaped bolt with a wide head with a bevelled edge. The junction between this and the loop is marked by two dragon or horse heads with finely grooved teeth, eyes and nostrils. The complete swivel would have had two loops which were joined at the 'rivet-shaped' part. This would allow free movement for the strap and would prevent it from becoming tangled. It is likely that this kind of strap junction was used in dogs' leashes and falconry during the earlier part of the medieval period.

Copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Type A (dating from the early medieval period, i.e. the 9th century AD. The strap end is complete except for the very end of the animal-head terminal, which is missing. The attachment end is shaped into two rounded lobes with a rivet hole in each one. The two small square-headed rivets are still in place, made from a copper alloy which is of a more greenish colour than the rest of the strap-end. Two vertical grooves run between the rivets, which then curve outwards to form the trilobate motif which is standard on this type of strap-end. On this pi…

Late Early Medieval to Early Medieval copper-alloy strap-end of Thomas's Class E, now corroded and incomplete. It is roughly sub-rectangular, with one end terminating in an incurved edge to either side, meeting at a rounded point. The other end (the attachment end) is flat and now broken across two small rivet holes. A transverse ridge decorated with four drilled dots (perhaps originally ring-and-dot motifs) separates the attachment end from the main body of the strap-end. The main plate is decorated with eight circular perforations set in a rough circle. When held with the attachment…

Free-standing steelyard weight. It has a square base and instead of an integral iron or bronze hook. It has been pierced just below the top. Through this hole a hook would have been passed in order to suspend it from the steelyard. Lead weights are generally difficult to date. Official weights of the medieval or post-medieval period would have carried a maker's or other kind of official mark. Many of the unoffical and home-made weights that were also in circulation were plain and in most cases, even the shape does not tell us much about their origin or time of use.

A complete circular flat-cylindrical cast lead-alloy object, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval period, i.e. 1400-1600. The lead weight is flat-cylindrical in cross-section with a flat base and flattish top. It seems to have been decorated with indentations on one side only. The lead weight is basic and has suffered corrosion. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists.…

A small fragment of a copper alloy socketed axe of Late Bronze Age date (1100 - 750 BC) most probably from a three ribbed axehead produced during the Ewart Park phase / industry of metalwork. The fragment is sub-rectangular in plan and curved in profile; the fragment is from the upper corner / mouth of an axe. Only one exterior face of the socket remains; the loop, lower socket and blade are missing due to old patinated breaks. The mouth of the object is rough and uneven; the fragment does not include any of the casting runners. Beneath the mouth the socket flares to form a relatively…

Copper-alloy Roman shield boss missing only its rivets, c. 43 - 410 AD. The shield boss is formed from a concave, domed knob with a wide, flat flange. Four lozenge-shaped rivet holes pierce the flange, spaced equally around the central knob. The edges of the rivet holes bend out on the underside, suggesting that the rivets were pierced through from the upper side. The upper surface of the shield boss is marked by a pair of grooves running in parallel to each other around the outer edge of the shield boss. This is repeated in the centre of the rim as well as around the central domed kn…

A silver seal most likely from the 16th-17th century and there is a record of arms related to the arms on it from the early 16th century. The matrix is not from Lancashire and it is curious how it turned up there. It is possible that it's deposition relates to the English Civil War 1642-1651 when men of Shropshire are known to have fought in Lancashire. The Kings army was originally based in Shrewsbury and then moved into Cheshire and then Lancashire. The Royalists recieved a defeat at Whalley which is not too far from the findspot. The arms are, "Argent, a chevron gules between thr…

Circular personal seal with legends of Lombardic lettering on both sides. Both inscriptions around central design Side 1 has a central petal design and the inscription S. ROGER + FIL' ROBERTI (Seal of Roger son of Robert). Side 2 has a central symmetrical abstract design. Suspension loop broken. Inscription reads S.WILL FIL'. BALDEWI' (Seal of William son of Baldwin). These inscriptions represent an unusual combination for a double-sided seal matrix. It is more common to find a seal and counter-seal of a single person, or the seal of a husband and wife.

Post-medieval fob seal matrix and chain, probably of late 18th-century date. The fob seal is oval and complete. The rear of the seal frame is domed with a sturdy openwork frame decorated with grapes and leaves and a central piercing to take the fob chain. The intaglio is secured in a frame without grips. The intaglio appears to be made from quartz, probably amethyst since it has a pale purple shine to it. To make the engraving stand out even more, a thin metal foil was inserted between intaglio and frame, which catches the light. At the centre is the carving of a bust of a male figure …

Cast copper alloy chape dating from the Late Bronze Age, that is c. 1000-800BC. The chape is related to the tongue-shaped chapes and is part of the Wilburton metalworking industry of the Late Bronze Age. It survives complete and in excellent condition. All surfaces are smooth and of golden-brown colour. It has a diamond-shaped cross section throughout with a probably solid-cast squere at the bottom. There is a small hole on either side to attach it to a scabbard which was probably made from leather. A very similar chape was recorded under SWYOR-4A2F62. NB: The original images were …

Small ring made from plaited silver wire. Hand-made. Rings of this type have been examined at the British Museum, where the opinion was tentatively given that they may be 19th century cane ferrules. However, possible parallels include Viking dome-shaped mounts formed of interwoven silver wire, and a ring from the 'scourge' in the ninth-century Trewhiddle hoard.

The head and part of the shank survive in very good condition with hardly any corrosion or bronze disease present on the surface, except in the centre of the obverse where corrosion started in the crevices of the decoration. It was made from cast copper alloy, probably with part-incised decoration on the obverse. The silvery shine on the reverse strongly suggests that the pin had been silvered or tinned.
