A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The spindle whorl is 33mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 9mm in diameter. The whorl is decorated on both sides with raised dots and lines radiating from the centre. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 32.23grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a heavy material such as wo…

Medieval lead weight, mis-shapen (probably miscast). It looks like the final object should have been a plano convex spindle whorl, but the pieces of the mould probablz got misaligned during the casting process, and half the lead spilled out while the other half produced one half of the spindle whorl. The end product would have had one side decorated with a star shape and the other with a sun-ray pattern. These spindle whorls (lead weights) are difficult to date but it seems that the decorated version are more likely to be earlier, e.g. Roman or Saxon.

It is plano-convex with a central perforation and while one side is decorated with a simple relief of 'sun rays' around the central perforation, the others bears a rune-like pattern made up of multiple mouldings of the 'algiz' rune (z). However, it is probably just a geometrical pattern, not actually the rune. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demostrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5g) being used for spinning cotton and heavier ones (30-35g) for spinning…

Roman or Medieval lead weight, most probably it would have been used as spindle whorl. However, it is mis-shapen, most probably miscast. The perforation is not intact and the reverse of the whorl has not been cast properly - perhaps the pieces of the mould got mis-aligned during the casting process and thus the then liquid lead could not be cast into its final shape. Thus, this object is propably a wasteproduct which for whatever reason did not re-enter the recycling process. The decoration is very faint on the surviving surface and may have comprised of a star. Somewhat elaborate conical weight with oval base, composed of five brass and five bronze segments plus the top segment which includes a small hook for suspension. The central rivet that held all the segments together was most probably made from iron. It is uncertain whether or not this was a weight, but it might be possible that, if the rivet was longer originally, segments could be added or taken away according to how light or heavy the weight was needed to be.

Small late 8th/early 9th century Viking lead weight into which has been inserted a piece of Irish, Scottish or Pictish metalwork of an 'Insular Art' style. While the weight itself was made from cast lead, the piece of inserted metalwork was made from cast cu-alloy which was subsequently gilded (small fragments of gilding remain in the grooves of the carved decoration). The decoration of the cu-alloy inlaid piece is fragmentary and seems to have been part of an ornamental interlacing, probably floral scrollwork border with a thinner, hatched border underneath.

The head is finely carved with fine, classic features. On her head she is 'balancing' a bag or sack(?). The interpretation as steelyard weight derives from the object's shape and weight; however, the finder suggested it may have been part of a table's, chair's or chest's foot(?).

This object may be a coin(?) weight, possibly of Oriental origin. It is the size of a medieval/post med. square coin weight and made from a reddish copper-alloy. Originally, it was probably square or rectangular, but the corners are smoothed down and the edges and surfaces are extremely worn. It appears, however, that the surfaces were decorated or inscribed with Arabic letters, possibly in a very ornate style, with dots and additional wavy lines between the letters.

Shield-shaped trade weights of this general type are believed to have been in use from the late 14th to at least the late 18th century. Lead shield-shaped weights of various qualities of workmanship and numerous designs have been in use over a long period of time. Lead weighs such as this were used to weigh goods under the averdepois system from 1390 in England and were used throughout the 15th century. It is likely that these weights represent a desire to standardize the trade weight system. They are found in denominations based on a pound of 16 ounces, which can be subdivided on…

A lead spindle-whorl of Medieval date. It is a circular bi-conical spindle whorl with a central circular hole. It is decorated with alternating pellets and lines on both sides. (ten segments, each with three pellets on one face, five segments with between three and six pellets on the other) Similar examples of spindle whorls have reportedly been found in contexts dated from the Roman through to the Post-Medieval period although the majority are typically dated broadly to the Medieval period c.1100-1500. It has a creamy brown patina. The diameter is 37mm and the weight 53.54g.

A cast lead alloy weight dating from the Medieval to the Post-Medieval period, (AD1066-1800). The object is oval in plan with a slightly raised rim on one face. One edge of the object has been damaged in recent times. Lead weights are common throughout the Medieval and Post-Medieval period and are therefore difficult to date accurately. There is a shield impressed on the face without a raised rim. Dimensions: 34.26mm in diameter, 6.72mm thick, 46.6g

'A medieval to post-medieval cast copper-alloy trade weight. The weight is circular in plan and flat in cross section. It has an incised circle around the edge creating a border and a further raised ring inside. There are four stamps on the weight but the emblem is currently unknown and no parallels have so far been discovered it is possibly a foreign trade weight. The reverse has not been seen by FLO. The weight is 32mm diameter. The earliest copper alloy trade weights apparently date from the late 14th and 15th century. From the reign of Henry VII, c. 1495 they start being stamped w…

A complete lead alloy weight or spindle whorl of probable medieval date 1100 to 1500 AD. The object is broadly circular in plan and cylindrical and undecorated although this may have eroded away. There is a circular aperture through the centre of the object which may suggest this is a spindle whorl rather than a weight. These types of objects are hard to date as their appearance remained unchanged for many hundreds of years. However it is likely that this spindle whorl is of medieval date (AD 1200-1500). Lead conical weight with a pointed apex and circular base. The base has a cavity within it that is almost circular in plan. The apex has an integral central circular aperture that is 3 mm in diameter which may have been used with a hook to suspend the weight, but it is more likely to have been used as a standing weight. The base has a cavity within it that is almost circular in plan. Similar weights are illustrated in Egan, G., 1998 The Medieval Household: Daily Living c.1150-c.1450 (Medieval Finds from Excavations in London) London : The Stationery Office, 322, no.1038, and are dated…

A cast lead spindle whorl, probably Medieval. The weight is flattish and sub-circular, thicker in the centre and with a perforation running through the middle. The object is fairly flat on both sides, with no decoration present. Similar spindle whorls have been found in medieval contexts including at Codnor Castle, Derbyshire; at the Austin Friary in Leicester (Mellor and Pearce, 1981) and the deserted medieval village of Thrislington (topsoil find; Austin 1989, 137, fig. 58.2). Also see several others on the PAS database, for example LANCUM-4FA054 and LANCUM-B0591B. The length is 4…

Post-Medieval lead alloy weight, it is circular, flat and with slightly rounded edges. It has a central recess pierced with two holes and no decoration. This gives it the appearance of a button, however, Gordon Bailey (p. 83, Fig 9.392) points out that such artefacts were actually weights used to hold down the hem of ladies dresses or as curtain weights. It is quite well cast suggesting a later date; possibly 1700-1850. The diameter is 29mm and the weight 26.31g.

A copper-alloy cup weight of post-medieval or modern date. It is part of a nested set and is circular in shape with sides which flare evenly upwards from the base to the rim. There is a stamp in the centre of the weight which is a dot within a ring. There is also a shield with a cross within it, a cross with a pellet at the end of the longer arm and the numeral 2. The object has a dark green patina. These types of weights were used for weighing gold and silver in the form of coin, small objects or as scrap metal or other precious materials (Saunders 2001, 125).

Medieval to early post medieval cast lead alloy, or lead, weight, biconical with a different decorative pattern on each face. The weight has a circular perforation through the centre. It has an external diameter of 30mm, and the central perforation has a maximum diameter of 11mm. The weight appears to have seen a lot of use as there is a great deal of wear. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." She adds that spindle whorls should ideally be circula…
