A pewter hawking whistle of Post-Medieval (probably 18th century) date. The body is cylindrical, tapering slightly towards the bottom. There is a cylindrical, rounded extension at one end, possibly for an attachment loop. A raised ring at the top separates the body section from the thinner mouth-piece. Immediately below this upper ring is the semi-circular aperture which allows the sound to escape. A second ring is located towards the bottom of the body. The curved plate which would be found on the underside of the mouth-piece is missing and a shaped piece of wood has been inserted in…

A lead plano-convex spindle whorl. The whorl is crudely made and decorated with several lines criss-crossing each other. The decoration on both sides is very similar. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). This example weighs 30.16 grams, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a lighter material.

Double-conical lead weight with central vertical perforation, ca. 9mm wide. The weight is decorated in high-relief on both sides: while one surface displays a six pointed star with raised dots between the spikes of the star, the other shows a very crude pattern of alternating lines and dots. This kind of lead weight is a very frequent metal-detecting find, especially on ploughed and pasture land. There is some archaeological evidence for these lead weights to have been used as spindle whorls in the 16th/17th century (pers. comm. Dr Kevin Leahy), but has been suggested that they could …

Cast lead-alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl dating from the medieval period, i.e. c. 1200-1500. The spindle whorl is biconical in shape with a circular hole in the centre and tapering sides. It was made from a lead-alloy and probably had moulded decoration on the obverse and reverse. However, both faces of the whorl are very worn; it is difficult to assess the decoration. It may have been writing, but it is much more likely that it was a decoration composed of lines, zig-zags and possibly dots. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, 66) points out that: "The function of l…

The artefact is heavy and looks very similar to sword or dagger pommels of the same period with a pyramidal shaped perforation through its entire length. The outer surface resembles that of a cockle shell, but in fact, it is more likely that it represents the various stages of the metal cooling down in 'waves'. A small splint of wood remains on the inside and it is more than likely that it was indeed used as a weight, maybe even as a counter weigh…

Unusual lead weight in appearance it looks like a steelyard weight which are usually cast in lead. Steelyards of different sizes have been used to weigh loads ranging from ounces to tons. A small steelyard could be a foot or less in length and thus conveniently used as a portable device that merchants and traders could use to weigh small ounce-sized items of merchandise. In other cases a steelyard could be several feet long and used to weigh sacks of flour and other commodities. Even larger steelyards were three stories tall and used to weigh fully laden horse drawn carts. There is…

Cast lead-alloy net sinker/weight dating from the late medieval to the early modern period, i.e. c. AD1500-1900. The weight is flat cylindrical with a plain reverse and four short lugs on the obverse. Two of the lugs are slightly bent, the other two more so, as if they were meant to keep the weight in place. The space between two of the lugs/spikes is quite worn and displays a pattern of abrasion; it seems as if a rope or string was tied around the weight here.

A circular lead item, possibly a spindle whorl. The lead weight is very crude and plano-convex in form, with an irregularly flat base and a slightly rounded top. It is decorated on both sides with a crude pattern of lines and dots. It has been pointed out that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). It therefore seems likely that this heavy example was used for spinning wool. The dating of un…

Very heavy ball-shaped cast lead weight with two deep grooves around it, the grooves crossing twice. The exact identification of lead weights can be difficult for they usually lack any official markings or numbers. It seems that this is household lead weight that was tied into netting, e.g. a fisherman's or hunter's net, in order to weigh it down. The deep grooves would certainly facilitate the attachement of a string or thin rope.

Shield-shaped trade weights of this general type are believed to have been in use from the late 14th to at least the late 18th century. Lead shield-shaped weights of various qualities of workmanship and numerous designs have been in use over a long period of time. Lead weighs such as this were used to weigh goods under the averdepois system from 1390 in England and were used throughout the 15th century. It is likely that these weights represent a desire to standardize the trade weight system. They are found in denominations based on a pound of 16 ounces, which can be subdivided on…

There is a circular aperture through the centre of the object which may suggest this is a spindle whorl rather than a weight. These types of objects are hard to date as their appearance remained unchanged for many hundreds of years. However it is likely that this spindle whorl is of medieval date (AD 1200-1500). Lead conical weight with a pointed apex and circular base. The base has a cavity within it that is almost circular in plan. The apex has an integral central circular aperture that is 3 mm in diameter which may have been used with a hook to suspend the weight, but it is more likely to have been used as a standing weight. The base has a cavity within it that is almost circular in plan. The object is fairly flat on both sides, with no decoration present. Similar spindle whorls have been found in medieval contexts including at Codnor Castle, Derbyshire; at the Austin Friary in Leicester (Mellor and Pearce, 1981) and the deserted medieval village of Thrislington (topsoil find; Austin 1989, 137, fig. 58.2). Post-Medieval lead alloy weight, it is circular, flat and with slightly rounded edges. It has a central recess pierced with two holes and no decoration. This gives it the appearance of a button, however, Gordon Bailey (p. 83, Fig 9.392) points out that such artefacts were actually weights used to hold down the hem of ladies dresses or as curtain weights. It is quite well cast suggesting a later date; possibly 1700-1850. The diameter is 29mm and the weight 26.31g.

A large cast lead alloy weight probably dating to the Medieval period, (1000-1500). The weight has a series of incised lines in the centre but the purpose of this is unknown. Lead weights were commonly used from the Roman period through to the post-medieval period for a wide variety of uses and are difficult to date with any certainty without any supporting archaeological context. Similar to YORYM-E41011, KENT-3256F6 and LVPL-DEA454 The diameter is 57mm. The diameter is 57mm.

Post Medieval cast lead alloy 4lb cylindrical weight with a heavy iron suspension loop. The weight takes the form of a gently tapering, sub oval profiled, cylinder, topped with a thick trapped iron loop. Possibly a ship's plumb or sounding weight, but these usually have a hollow base. This was filled with a sticky substance that allowed the sea floor to be sampled. Based on whether this was sandy, gravelly, rocky, decisions would then be made on which anchor to use or whether to anchor at all. See LVPL-9C46A6 for a more detailed explanation of maritime sounding weights. It may have be…

There are some markings on the domed side, possibly initials, but mostly illegible. The absence of markings makes it difficult to date with any precision. It is most likely a Post-Medieval cast lead object: a palm guard, for use by a leather worker to protect the palm whilst stitching. In plan it is oval in shape, pointed at one end. A lead hem weight of post-medieval date. It is a flat discoid weight with a slight rim around the circumference of one side. It has three circular stitching holes. It is lightly patinated all over. It is similar to other examples recorded on the database, for example NLM-0BF625 and NLM-78DD3E. This example is unusual as other examples recorded only have two holes, the majority weighing between 10g-20g, while the large diameter and heavier weight of this example suggests it was for weighing down the hem of a curtain rather than for a dress. The diameter is 34mm and the weight 51.56g.
