A cast lead weight or possibly a seal, probably of Post Medieval date from the 17th–19th century AD. The circular disc has a possible privy mark in the centre of one face. The reverse has a privy mark with a beaded border and looks like it originally had a lettering in it now illegible. A privy mark was originally a small mark or differentiation in the design of a coin for the purpose of identifying the mint, moneyer, or some other aspect of the coin's production or origin, for control purposes. The obverse has a central motiff of a flower possibly a rose. The diameter of the stamp i…

A cast lead-alloy weight, probably home-made/unofficial, dating from the post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c. AD1600-1800. The reverse is plain and shows that the weight was roughly cast whilst the obverse displays lettering withing two concentric circles. It is mirror-writing and it is not possible to make out the writing in the outer circle. However, the central writing reads '1/2lb'. It is very similar to a lead weight recorded under LANCUM-1440E4. Dimensions: Diameter: 47mm, thickness: 4mm and weight: 82.74g.

A complete circular biconical cast lead-alloy weight, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval or early post-medieval period, i.e. AD1200-1600. The lead weight is flat biconical in cross-section with a rounded base and top. It is decorated with a more complicated pattern than most of these lead weights classed as 'spindle whorls'. One side bear the moulded pattern of four(?) dots-in-circlets with flower buds between circles and the other side shows seven spoked circles resembling the wheels of a carriage/cart, a breaking wheel or, possibly more appropriate in this co…

Cast lead Post Medieval weight. The object is sub-triangular in plan with the narrowed end being the top which has a circular perforation used for attachment. It has a rectangular cross-section throughout. The surface is uneven. Regular diagonal grooves have been cut into one face and both edges of the object. The opposite face has more irregular scratches or grooves. This sort of weight could have been used for many purposes for many periods and so is difficult to date precisely when found out of context. A similar example which can be found on the database is LVPL-AD20B5.

A lead plano-convex lead weight, probably a spindle whorl. It has a central perforation and it is decorated with what is possibly a moulded five-pointed star in relief. Lead weights like these are common finds and it has been noted that (if it is a spindle whorl), the weight of the spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5g) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30-35g) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, 184). This example weighs 31.72g, so it seems likely that it would have been used to spin a heavy material such …

Lead trade weight with the figure '1' imprinted on the obverse, probably indicating the weight. Since it was made from lead and does not show any 'offical markings' like a crown or the coat of arms of London, it is probably weight used by a trader or farmer (?). One could imagine that it was part of a set of several weights, the others weighing 1/8, 1/4, 1/2, 2/1 etc. Like the more common brass or cu-alloy alloy weights of this type, they could have been stored in a stack, a smaller weight fitting into the rim of the next heavier one.

Several lead-alloy weights of different sizes and shapes (see attached picture). They were all found in the same corner of a field, but did not form part of a hoard. They almost certainly date from different periods from Late Roman to the Medieval Ages, were home-made and may have been used as spindle whorls, net sinkers, gaming pieces weights for traps or as part of weighing equipment. It is difficult to attribute an exact date to the individual weights. Many thanks to the finders for supplying the attached picture.

Medieval lead weight, mis-shapen (probably miscast). It looks like the final object should have been a plano convex spindle whorl, but the pieces of the mould probablz got misaligned during the casting process, and half the lead spilled out while the other half produced one half of the spindle whorl. The end product would have had one side decorated with a star shape and the other with a sun-ray pattern. These spindle whorls (lead weights) are difficult to date but it seems that the decorated version are more likely to be earlier, e.g. Roman or Saxon.

Roman or Medieval lead weight, most probably used as spindle whorl. It is plano-convex with a central perforation and while one side is decorated with a simple relief of 'sun rays' around the central perforation, the others bears a rune-like pattern made up of multiple mouldings of the 'algiz' rune (z). However, it is probably just a geometrical pattern, not actually the rune. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demostrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3-5g) being used for spinning cotton and heavier ones (30-35g) for spinning…

Roman or Medieval lead weight, most probably it would have been used as spindle whorl. However, it is mis-shapen, most probably miscast. The perforation is not intact and the reverse of the whorl has not been cast properly - perhaps the pieces of the mould got mis-aligned during the casting process and thus the then liquid lead could not be cast into its final shape. Thus, this object is propably a wasteproduct which for whatever reason did not re-enter the recycling process. The decoration is very faint on the surviving surface and may have comprised of a star. Small late 8th/early 9th century Viking lead weight into which has been inserted a piece of Irish, Scottish or Pictish metalwork of an 'Insular Art' style. While the weight itself was made from cast lead, the piece of inserted metalwork was made from cast cu-alloy which was subsequently gilded (small fragments of gilding remain in the grooves of the carved decoration). The decoration of the cu-alloy inlaid piece is fragmentary and seems to have been part of an ornamental interlacing, probably floral scrollwork border with a thinner, hatched border underneath.

A moulded relief design of a lions rampant is present on the upper surface. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The length is 34mm, the width is 25mm and the weight 119g. Lead weighs such as this were commonly used to weigh goods under the averdepois system from 1390 in England and were used throughout the 15th century. It is likely that these weights represent a desire to standardize the trade weight system. Biggs & Withe…

Biconical lead alloy weight, probably a spindle whorl from a drop spindle dating from the 13th-15th century AD. The whorl is worn but complete. It is biconical in shape, with a central hole and decorated on both obverse and reverse: There are moulded dots on one side and alternating lines and dots on the other. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated lead-alloy weights are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists. They are usually biconical …

Cast conical lead weight, possibly a steelyard. The underside is flat with a central shrinkage cavity and the top has a trapped iron wire suspension loop. These weights were often chamfered; if this one was it has since been heavily abraded. Weights of this sort were used for a long period and dating usually relies on associated finds but this example probably dates to the Late Medieval or early to mid Post-Medieval period 1400 to1700AD. The length is 46mm and the base diameter 32mm.

Squashed lead vessel, possibly a holy water container from a church. It is complete with a straight-sided body (flat back and semi-circular front) and flaring neck. The area below the neck is decorated with three deep grooves, the reverse with three lead stripes. There is an edge in the lower part of the body where it possibly fit into a semicircular fitting, perhaps a horizonal metal strap. This strap would hold the lead vessel in place at the pillar. Several explanation for these vessels have been put forward and the most likely, in this case, seems to be that it was a vessel fo…

Unidentified lead fragment. Original identification suggested the object may have been a fragment of a printing block, however, there is a slight curve to the decorated side which would suggest otherwise. Possibly a fragment of lead mould for a pottery vessel. The decoration shows a lined edge with two curved lines and a possible leaf/flower pattern inside.

Unidentified object, probably a bag or sack seal or a customs badge? It was cast from lead and is tulip/harp-shaped. While the reverse is plain, the obverse is separated by five horizontal grooves into six almost equally-sized fields. The decoration/writing reads: 1: cross (?), 2. small zigzag pattern, 3. R.F, 4. large zigzag pattern, 5. 19, 6. S+F or S+T. The '19' is printed in a different script and may have been added later, e.g. as a customs or sales mark(?).

Triangular lead object, possibly for decorative purposes (part of decorative frame?). It is of white colour with the original surface shining through in silver. It seems as if it could have been part of a larger object, e.g. it could have been one point of the Star of David. The individual arms are hightly decorated with zigzag lines and angular as well as round mouldings. Parts have been broken off at the three points.
