Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is decorated on both sides with a pattern of dots and lines in relief. The lines divide each ring-shaped surface in ca. ten crudely designed but equally-sized cells, five of which show a central design of an 'arrow' or 'heart', while the remaining five cells show two dots set above each other vertically.
The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sinkers, hunting nets or traps or t…

Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is very crudely decorated on both sides: while one side shows a crude pattern of criss-crossing lines in relief, the other shows at least one circle of dots around the central perforation. There may be two more circles of dots - one closer to the perforation, the other closer to the rim -, but they are not as clear at the central ring.
The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sin…

Cast lead-alloy weight of double-conical shape with large central perforation. It is decorated on both sides with a simple ring-and-dot motif: however, whilst there are six ring-and-dots on one side, the other shows only four.
The most common interpretation of this kind of weight is 'spindle whorl' but a much wider range of use for these objects can be envisioned, e.g. for fish traps, net sinkers, hunting nets or traps or to weigh down cloth (table cloths, curtains, etc). Similar items found in archaeological contexts have been dated to ca. AD1400-1600.

A complete circular flat-cylindrical cast lead-alloy object, possibly a spindle whorl dating from the later medieval period, i.e. 1400-1600. The lead weight is flat-cylindrical in cross-section with a flat base and flattish top. It seems to have been decorated with indentations on one side only. The lead weight is basic and has suffered corrosion. Lead weights like these are common finds, but only rarely from excavated contexts which is why date and origin are difficult to pinpoint. Decorated spindle whorls are very rare finds in excavations, but are often found by metal detectorists.…

A lead bi-conical spindle whorl decorated on both sides. The central hole is eight mm in diameter. The decoration on one side consists of ten raised oblique lines radiating from the central hole to the edge, forming cells; each cell holds a raised pellet. The opposite side is decorated with a raised cross, each arm of the cross contains three oblique lines and there are three pellets in each of the quarters formed by the cross. The body which is in good condition has a dark brownish patina and looks to have not had much use.

A complete bi-conical lead spindle whorl decorated on both sides. The decoration consists of a number of raised lines running from the central hole to the edge of the body forming separate cells, each cell occupied by a single pellet. The central hole is 8.5 mm in diameter. The item has an overall flattish appearance possibly due to bad casting and/or the use of a poorly made or worn mould.

Cast lead spindle whorl probably dating to the Medieval period, (1100-1500). The object is circular in plan and oval in cross-section. It has a large central circular perforation. The perforation has an internal diameter of 12.20mm. Both surfaces are decorated with a moulded linear star-burst pattern. Each point of the star is divided by raised pellets. The outer edge of the object has been pressed inwards and overlaps part of the decoration on each surface. There is a large gash on the side of the object where the object has been cut or damaged by a sharp object. The object has a lig…

Medieval cast lead weight dating from 1150-1500 AD, possibly a spindle whorl or fowling or fishing weight. The weight is flat sub-circular with a circular perforation running through the centre. The weight has a maximum external diameter of 28mm, and the central perforation has a maximum diameter of 9mm. The weight is a maximum of 7mm thick, and it has a mass of 24.67g. The weight is decorated with dividing lines and rounded pellets on both sides. In the “Finds Recording Guide”, Geake (2001, p66) points out that: “The function of leads weights would have varied, from spindle-whor…
