A dark grey hawking whistle most likely made from tin alloy. Cylindrical in shape with a tapering end and broken extension piece, possibly for an attachment loop. A thin raised ring at the top seperates the body of the whistle from the mouth-piece. Immediately below this upper ring is the semi-circular aperture which allows the sound to escape. The object is mostly intact although here is damage to the end of the mouthpiece, and some distortion of shape from erosion processes. Roman to Modern cigar shaped whetstone. The finder's partner is a qualified geologist and says the sharpening stone is made from a "Fine to medium grained, quartz cemented sandstone, probably local millstone grit but its source location in the Bowland stratigraphic sequence is not known. A lead weight spindle whorl (or possibly net sinker or trap weight) of conical shape. The spindle whorl is 29mm in diameter with a central perforation that is 9mm in diameter. If decorated, the decoration is hard to make out: it probably consisted of random lines in relief on the diagonal surface. It has been noted that the weight of a spindle whorl is demonstrative of the thickness of yarn produced, with lighter spindle whorls (3 - 5 grams) being used for spinning cotton and the heavier ones (30 - 35 grams) for spinning wool (Margeson 1993, page 184). Small late 8th/early 9th century Viking lead weight into which has been inserted a piece of Irish, Scottish or Pictish metalwork of an 'Insular Art' style. While the weight itself was made from cast lead, the piece of inserted metalwork was made from cast cu-alloy which was subsequently gilded (small fragments of gilding remain in the grooves of the carved decoration). The decoration of the cu-alloy inlaid piece is fragmentary and seems to have been part of an ornamental interlacing, probably floral scrollwork border with a thinner, hatched border underneath.

Small trade weight of cast copper alloy. Depicts inscription WIV (William 4th) beneath a crown with a possible provincial mark WK beneath. The W may indicate 'Wiltshire' but it is unclear what the K represents. William 4th reigned from 1830-1837 therefore the weight was cast in this period and follows the introduction of the 1826 'Imperial Standards' act (Bailey 2000 page 43).

Pewter 'horn book' with letters W, X, Y and Z in relief above a grid pattern. There are fragments of the letters Q, R, S, T and V above, separated by a horizontal line from the letters below. Top part of a clicker cast in lead alloy. This is rectangular with rounded corners and a right-angled flange around one end, which extends for about one third the length. The top is moulded with frog (viewed from above). Identified by Jim Halliday. Post-medieval, probably C19th/early C20th. An exact parallel was found at Hintlesham, Suffolk and reported to the PAS, Find ID SF10571. An example bearing a male figure was found in Lancashire (E83DD3).

Copper-alloy swivel with oval loop. The loop has an integral rivet- or nail-shaped bolt with a wide head with a bevelled edge. The junction between this and the loop is marked by two dragon or horse heads with finely grooved teeth, eyes and nostrils. The complete swivel would have had two loops which were joined at the 'rivet-shaped' part. This would allow free movement for the strap and would prevent it from becoming tangled. It is likely that this kind of strap junction was used in dogs' leashes and falconry during the earlier part of the medieval period.
