Treasure case no. 2020 T131
Description:
Cast 'body' or 'buoy' from a late 16th to 17th century 'bosun's' whistle (c.AD 1600-1700).
The buoy is in the shape of sphere that is hollow, at the base of which is a circular perforation measuring 5mm in diameter. Surrounding the object is a high zoomorphic ridge with the thickness of 2mm running around the centre, sealing the two hemispheres together. The ridge is in the form of a serpent with the head terminating the ridge at one side and the tail the other. The serpent has two eyes frontally positioned below which protrudes a s…

Silver 'love token', probably late 17th/early 18th century. At that time, medieval and post medieval hammered silver coins were used as 'amulets' after they have been rendered useless by bending and perforating it. Sometimes the coin can still be identified; this specimen, however, has been rendered unrecognisable.

Post Medieval silver coin, probably a threepence of William III, counter struck in the early nineteenth century to create a ‘slap token’. Token probably dates to between 1804 and 1817 AD.
The diameter is 17mm, and the weight 1.17g.
There are multiple countermarks, including the initials and a sunburst motif. The sunburst is an unusual mark to find on a slap token.

A small, silver token. It is overprinted and this obscures a lot of the detail. Apparent is the word PORT, and the letters M, M, F, cut by a larger curve or letter C. Although it is probably silver, it is not possible to determine its age and it is unlikely to be over 300 years old and therefore it does not qualify as Treasure under the terms of the Treasure Act 1996.
Dimensions: 15mm long and 15mm wide, weighs 1.24g

Silver Post Medieval (c. 1800-1900) thimble. The outer face of this thimble has machine-made horizontal lines of circular indentations. The apex is decorated with a series of concentric circles comprised of small square indentations, radiating from a central raised pellet. Twenty one horizontal rows of hexagonal indentations cover the upper two thirds of the thimble to form a honeycomb pattern. A silver thimble, dating from to 1750 - 1900AD. The thimble is flattened probably by a post-depositional event and would have probably originally been domed with slightly flared sides and a rounded top and has the original owners name "Jane Scorefill" engraved around the bottom.
The thimble appears to have been drilled although it could be cast, it is often difficult to distinguish between cast and hammered thimbles. A series of closely and unevenly set sub-circular dents cover the sides. The drilled pits begin at the top and continue in a continuous spiral to the base in a regular …

A complete silver trifid spoon with a floral decoration of post-medieval date 1670 - 1700AD. The handle has a flat section and increases in width towards its flat-ended terminal. The bowl is oval and concave and the stem is flat and rectangular in cross section and is crushed and distorted. At the point that the stem meets the bowl a 'rats tail' develops and is a third of the bowl in length. Using 'scratch engraving' a foliate design has been engraved on either side of the rats tail, there is one petal/leaf around the end of the rats tail. The stem widens after the half way point and …

A silver seal most likely from the 16th-17th century and there is a record of arms related to the arms on it from the early 16th century. The matrix is not from Lancashire and it is curious how it turned up there. It is possible that it's deposition relates to the English Civil War 1642-1651 when men of Shropshire are known to have fought in Lancashire. The Kings army was originally based in Shrewsbury and then moved into Cheshire and then Lancashire. The Royalists recieved a defeat at Whalley which is not too far from the findspot.
The arms are, "Argent, a chevron gules between thr…

Possibly the silver frame of a late 18th century seal matrix or 'fob seal'. The frame is very fragile-looking, with half of it broken off (breaks visible on the reverse). The frame was made from silver wire with a clear front and back. It appears that half of it is missing, with all four strands being held together by the 'silver binding' at the top. The bottom loops would have been soldered or attached to the fob seal or swivel seal matrix.

Silver seal matrix formed of two pieces soldered together. The die (face of the seal) is a oval in shape in plan with decreasing oval pediments behind it, finishing in a short stem which is attached to that would have formed an openwork fitment of some kind, possibly to hang as a pendant. The die face is shallow cut / engraved with the head in side view, facing right, of a male. This image is clearly of a slave - the features are of a person of the slave diaspora and they are shown wearing a slave collar, above a draped garment. Around the edge of the seal is a design formed of pellets…
