Post Medieval to Modern copper alloy, possibly brass, probable cannon shaped whistle. It could possibly be a toy cannon with a terminal touch hole rather then the more usual position atop the breech. In addition to its manufactured decoration it has the initials A L or G scratched onto near the breech. Probably dates to between c1750 and c1970 AD. The material and level of finish suggests the latter half of the age range.
The length is 46mm, width 14mm, diameter 10mm, and the weight is 13.94g.

There is a cylindrical, rounded extension at one end, possibly for an attachment loop. A raised ring at the top separates the body section from the thinner mouth-piece. Immediately below this upper ring is the semi-circular aperture which allows the sound to escape. A second ring is located towards the bottom of the body. The curved plate which would be found on the underside of the mouth-piece is missing and a shaped piece of wood has been inserted in…

A copper alloy tapered tube whistle of the 19th century. This style of whistle is also known as a Beaufort whistle. The main body of the whistle consists of a tapered copper alloy tube with sound holes on opposite sides towards the narrow end. The cap has some moulded decoration around the top of a raised rim and a (damaged) suspension loop attached directly to the centre of the cap, without a knop. Dating from around 1800 onwards, many of these whistles - particularly those used by police forces - were replaced by the 'Metropolitan' style whistle by around 1880. It has a greenish pat…

Copper alloy whistle probably for hawking Post-medieval 1500 to 1800 AD. The whistle is circular in cross section. The mouth of the whistle is slight tapered and there is an oval half moon shaped opening just beneath the mouth. The base of the whistle is closed by a suspension loop. The body is decorated with a series of engraved lines in the form of creating a zig zag pattern. A number of whistles have been recorded by the PAS, however a direct parallel has not been found. It is likely that the dating of this whistle falls within the period 1500-1800. The whistle is associated with a…

A dark grey hawking whistle most likely made from tin alloy. Cylindrical in shape with a tapering end and broken extension piece, possibly for an attachment loop. A thin raised ring at the top seperates the body of the whistle from the mouth-piece. Immediately below this upper ring is the semi-circular aperture which allows the sound to escape. The object is mostly intact although here is damage to the end of the mouthpiece, and some distortion of shape from erosion processes.

Small stone fragment, possibly the remains of a whetstone. Date uncertain. The surfaces are too worn and damaged to be abolutely certain that this was, indeed, an artefact. It may be natural. It is was a whetstone, the date range would be 2000BC-AD1900, as single stray finds of simple whetstones are notoriously difficult to date.

Roman to Modern cigar shaped whetstone. The finder's partner is a qualified geologist and says the sharpening stone is made from a "Fine to medium grained, quartz cemented sandstone, probably local millstone grit but its source location in the Bowland stratigraphic sequence is not known. The visible striations are not natural." Falttened areas or facets are typical of stones that have been well used. The tapered elongated cylindrical shape is typical of those used for sharpening scythes and sickles. Similar stones in modern materials are still in production (see attached image). Sickl…
