Cast lead-alloy pilgrim's souvenir or ampulla dating from the later medieval period, i.e. c. 15th-16th century. The ampulla is complete with a circular main body and a funnel/triangular-shaped neck and top. The ampulla carries moulded decoration: an elaborate fleur-de-lis on one side and a crowned (?)flower with stylised lateral foliage on the other side. These motifs are partially obscured by a near-central, neat circular hole, apparently pierced from each side in turn.

Medieval cast lead pilgrim's ampulla, its neck still pinched shut - and supposedly containing holy water. It has a round body and funnel-shaped neck and is in good overall condition - only the two small handles for suspension are missing. While the obverse is decorated with the crowned 'W' for Our Lady of Walsingham, the reverse is decorated with a faded six-petalled flower. Spencer writes: "Like the prototype in Nazareth, the Holy House was associated with a well, the water from which was noted for its miraculous healing properties. There can be little doubt that Walsingham's pilgrim…

Medieval lead pilgrim's ampulla with a crowned W on one side and no image on the other. Both handles have been broken off. Spencer, B., p. 16: "The crown (or more often the crowned W) regularly appears on this sort of ampulla...and it may be intended as the emblem of Our Lady, the Queen of HEavenm or more specifically as the golden crown, the gift of Henry III, worn by the statue of Our Lady of Walsingham." Medieval cast lead ampulla, bent and badly damaged. However, the design on both sides is still visible: on the obverse is a Lombardic 'T' (for Thomas Becket) and on the reverse a fleur-de-lis design. Thomas Becket had been Chancellor of England and adviser to Henry II. This friendship enabled Becket to become Archbishop of Canterbury in 1162. Shortly after this, in 1164, a dispute with the king forced Becket to flee to France. He returned triumphantly to Canterbury on 1 December 1170 but was murdered on 29 December of the same year. This was apparently at the order of Henry II. Fou…

Medieval cast lead ampulla, undamaged, but handles missing. The body is decorated with vertical grooves on the back and a crescent-shaped ornament with dots on the front. Around the neck is a ornamental band made of a zigzag line in high relief. Because there is no heraldic ornament or letter that indicates which shrine it came from, it is very difficult to date it.
