Object type: THIMBLE
Broad period: MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A late Medieval double skinned copper alloy thimble, dating from about AD 1300 - 1500, probably AD 1400 - 1500. The thimble is a smooth, cast beehive conical shape, with angled walls and a domed top. It has an outer layer of metal with circular pits, most of which is missing, and an inner layer or sleeve that does not have any pits.  The outer layer has vertical lines of small (probably hand punched) circular indentations. The basal edge has a jagged uneven edge suggesting an old break with a small V shaped break or crack. The metal has a gr…

A copper alloy coin; probably a contemporary copy of a Roman nummus dating from AD 300 - 400. Originally thought to be a styca, closer inspection suggests that the visible part of the design is a crude forward facing figure, with a cross on the right, rather than the central cross and surrounding letters that would be expected on a styca. The coin is thicker than would be expected for an official issue. Length: 12.16mm Width: 10.28mm Thickness: 2.21mm Weight: 1.22g
