An incomplete cast copper-alloy zoomorphic mount or figurine of probable Roman date (c.AD 43-410). This is a casting of a bull, moulded in fine detail. The broad head is well defined, the nostrils, eyes and ears are all present. The bull has two horns curving forward and over the front of the head, which is lowered. The muscular body is well moulded. There are on the flanks of one side the remains of what may be three patches of enamel, although this is by no means certain. On one eye are the remains of red enamel or possibly the denuded remnants of a red gemstone. None of th…

A lead alloy weight. It has been formed by rolling a sub circular flat piece of lead alloy, possibly around a narrow diameter former. Hence the narrowing 'flap' of material can be seen along one side of the narrow weight, basicaly cylindrical in shape but wider in the centre than the ends. It has an even, light patina.Such weights were used over a long period of time, possibly as fishing weights, amongst other applications. Dimensions: It is 34mm long and 15mm in diameter, the central hole is 5mm diameter, and it weighs 24.3g

Fragment, probably one third, of a possible Iron Age to Early Medieval copper alloy strap distributor. It would originally have been circular in plan (see reconstructed image), and is flat in section. There is ring and dot decoration on one face. Suggested date range c400 BC to c1066 AD. Other suggestions for object type include fob dangler, openwork disc brooch, and even Early Medieval continental sun disc. Length 52mm, width 41mm, thickness 4mm, weight 14.9g. Probable original diameter 54mm.

A substantial lead alloy ingot. The ingot is roughly rectangular in shape and section. It is slightly concave on one side, which may be contraction after casting. It has an even brown patina. It approximates to 55 Scandinavian units of 4.43g, although at this scale that is not conclusive. Although lead was used widely over a long period of time, this artefact has been found in association with early medieval finds on a possible Romano-British site. It is therefore suggested that this might be early medieval in date. Dimensions: 70mm long and 30mm wide, 15mm deep and weighs 240g

A lead alloy spindle whorl or weight. It is a truncated cone in shape, both faces are flat, and one side is slightly thicker than the other. The hole is large in comparison to the diameter of the artefact, and this, with the unevenness, suggests that it is likely to be a weight rather then a whorl. Dimensions: 18mm diameter and 6mm deep, the hole is 8mm diameter and it weighs 7.83g

A lead alloy weight or gaming piece. It is approximately conical although two flatter faces are present on the artefact, possibly miscast originally or as a result of use or deposition. A hole runs vertically through the centre of the object, off centre at the base. It has an even white patina. Similar objects are found on the data base with or without the central hole, an example of one with is SUSS-80AF39, or YORYM-173EE5 which is the same form as the artefact here but without the hole. A spindle whorl or possible weight of lead alloy. It has two flat faces, one smaller in diameter than the other, and the sides are curved. The central hole is small at 5m diameter, this may suggest either an early date for this or that is was used as a weight. As earlier whorls are not commonly made form lead alloy, this is probably a weight. Dimensions: 23mm diameter, 9mm deep and the hole is 5mm in diameter. It weights 28.93g

A copper alloy harness pendant. It is a teardrop shape with pointed protrusions, there would have been seven in total, three on each side and one at the bottom. There is a longer protrusion where the pendant would have been fitted. It is quite degraded, with a green patina on one side and parts of the protrusions are missing. On the other face there is a concreted deposit, it is difficult to determine the nateure of this but it is possibly enamel.  Dimensions: 38mm long and 25mm wide, it weighs 7.208g

A lead alloy weight or net sinker. It is formed of a long, roughly symmetrical biconical shape, with a hole which passes through the length of the item. It has an even white patina with brown staining from the soil in places. Similar net sinkers on the database, for example NARC-2DF5D1 and YORYM-123889 have a wide date range allocated, from 200BC to AD1900. In view of the excellent survival of this example, a date from AD1200-1800 is most likely. Dimensions: 26mm long and 9mm diameter, it weighs 11.03g

A copper alloy terret ring, probably of the Roman period. The ring is oval in shape with faceted faces around the radius, which means that the ring is almost diamond shaped in section. Under the ring is a an oval 'skirt', although very narrow and not  the usual wider skirt associated with these artefacts. This skirt is decorated with notches around the edge. Under this is a rectangular. mount with a rectangular central hole. Lewis in LPFG Datasheet 6 classifies these as being Continental in origin. Dimensions: 38mm long and 35mm wide, it weighs 29g

The central hole is 5.7mm in diameter. It is of Walton Rogers form B2. Dimensions: The whorl is  32.2mm in diameter, 6.5mm thick and weighs 49.5g.  Walton Rogers suggests that Form B2 whorls were used from from Iron Age to Medieval periods, but the size of the central hole makes an Iron Age or Roman date more likely.  For similar objects in PAS see, S…
