A complete lead trade weight of medieval to post-medieval date, about AD 1380 - 1600. The weight is sub-triangular; shield-shaped with rounded edges and corners, having a flat top and sides tapering to a point. The edge is a border round a raised surface which is decorated with a raised moulded design of a crowned fleur de lis. There is a pierced hole at the centre of the top of the shield and two notches, one on either side of the bottom of the shield. The reverse is flat and undecorated. The metal has a mid-grey brown patina and is worn with some scratches on the reverse. T…

A lead alloy suspension weight. It is a rounded conical shape, with the top extended from the body but flattened, with a hole through the centre. The deep marks that are cut into the body are probably post depositional. Dimensions: It is 29mm high, the base diameter is 25mm and it weighs 64.78g

Two copper alloy possible polyhedral weights. They are of polyhedral shape but faceted unevenly on all sides. Most of the faces have a pattern of parallel lines on them. Overall they have an even green patina, the incised lines have orange soil in them. They have a sheen and if made of lead this would be unusual, it is suspected though because of the weight that it is a lead alloy but with a greater proportion of another metal in it, hence designation as copper alloy. The weights fall between both the Scandinavian and Dublin Viking unit weight sy…

A possible lead alloy weight or gaming piece. It is irregular in shape, being triangular at the bottom but with a circular top half. The base is also not straight and is 'kinked' halfway along, although this may be as a result of damage and not deliberate. It is flat on the front and back faces. The base is not smooth but has what may be symbols etched into it. It is difficult to discern if all of these are damage or deliberate but the horseshoe shaped symbol is obviously deliberate, the possible rune next to it is not so clear-cut. It is exceptionally large and heavy…

A fragment of lead alloy bar with a circular cross section. The base is flat and very slighty concave, possibly as a result of casting as opposed to design, and the edges are rounded. Near the other end a collar cast into the piece, and beyond this the bar may have been cut twice, forming a slightly triangular 'end'. This may have been for assay in some way, alternatively it could have been used as a gaming piece and the shape is to distinguish it.  It has been found in association with other lead pieces and may be part of a collection which it was inte…

A lead alloy shape which may be an incomplete suspension weight. It has a circular body and part of this extends to form a neck, giving an overall teardrop shape. This neck is finished with a sub rectangular shape, slightly wider than the neck where they join. It is flat on one side, the main body is domed in the centre, the neck and rectangular end have an approximately semi-circular section. There are no distinguishing marks. There are some indentations in the centre of the flat side, and it may be that this is not a weight but an unusual palm guard Dimensions: It is 63mm …

A small, globular lead alloy piece, probably a weight although it could also be a gaming piece. It is flat on the bottom and the top is a shallow dome. It has a shiny, dark grey colour, except where it is damaged at the edge, when it is light brown. Similar domed weighs are known from the Viking camp site at Torksey, Lincolnshire, and it is possible that this is a similar object. See also SF-D5B50D Dimensions: 20mm diameter and 6mm deep, it weighs 16.18g

A lead alloy weight, probably a net weight. It has been formed by rolling a circular flat piece of lead alloy, possibly around a narrow diameter former, and the arc shaped flap of the material can thus be seen along one side of the narrow weight. It is cylindrical in shape but wider in the centre than the ends, because of the circular plate from which it is made. It has an even, light brown patina.Such weights were used over a long period of time and are difficult to date. For example, LANCUM-4FF9DB is dated to the Roman period, NARC-2DF5D1 is attribu…
