Thirty five complete lead musket balls or shot dating to the Post Medieval period (c. AD 1600-1700), found in close proximity to each other.
Twenty five were found in one area, with a further ten 10m away in an adjacent field. They look freshly cast with indentations were the sprue may have been removed as opposed to a 'proud' sprue mark. Most of spherical and complete, but two are distorted, and this is probably as a result of miscasting, versus use. All the musket balls are a mid to light grey colour, with an even surface patina. There are also two p…

Post Medieval lead alloy shot or ball. The ball has been fired and impacted something soft, probably wet ground. It also exhibits faceting, typical of gas jetting, formed in the barrel when the firearm was discharged. The size of shot is typical of military firearms of the 1600s and 1700s. Dates to between c1600 and c1800 AD. Diameter approximately 22mm and weight 42.25g.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot assemblage of 11 balls. All the shot has been flattened as a result of direct impact with a hard surface, probably stone. There are lines on four of the bits of shot that may be remnant casting seams, or impressions of the objects they struck. Probably dating to between c1600 and c1900 AD.
Diameters 15mm to 19mm, weights 2.4g to 3.4g, and total assemblage weight 33.49g.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot or ball. Probably distorted during discharge from the weapon or by being miscast. There is an area of what looks like gas 'scalloping', but this is probably a product of manufacture rather than a result of impact. Probably dating to between c1600 and c1900 AD.
Length 10mm, width 9mm, thickness 8mm, and weight 4.23g.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot or ball. Probably unused or spent. It has been modified by chewing. Though the chewing could remove mass from the ball, it was still done as the chewing caused greater damage to it's intended target. Modern bullets with hollow points are manufactured for a similar reason.
Diameter approximately 10mm and weight 5.33g.
Probably dating to between c1600 and c1900 AD.

Post Medieval lead alloy shot assemblage of 21 balls. Mostly unused or spent. Some miscast and some demonstrating probable light impact damage. Found in conjunction with LANCUM-936FA4, LANCUM-93AEC9, and others, suggesting that the area was probably a popular site for either attempting to shoot wildfowl, or for casting the shot. A good number of lead and lead alloy weights were found in the area too. Very few of the lead and lead alloy objects found in the vicinity showed much in the way of abrasion and many retained casting nipples and seams. Probably dating to between …

A lead post-medieval (AD c.1600-1800) possible shot of the "capstan" or "bobbin" type.
The shot is in the shape of an hourglass. Each end is slightly concave, suggesting that this may have been the middle shot from a multi-ball load. There is a short vertical ridge on one side, which may be a result of the casting process. The undamaged quality of the object might imply it wasn't used.
Examples similar to this can be found on entries LIN-13BBFB and SWYOR-0CD3B9. Entry SWYOR-52BF1A suggests that bobbin shot is not especially common in the North and is more often found in the Sout…

A lead alloy artefact, probably part of a Post-medieval casting of small musket shot, dating from AD 1600 - 1900. It consists a narrow strip of lead, flat on the upper surface and with a narrow casting seam on the underside, from which depend the remains of six casting sprues. The spheroids are very small, each being 5mm in diameter, and were probably intended to be buckshot. A similar casting strip, also with quite small spheres, is recorded on the database at reference LEIC-6AF3CC. The length is 120mm, width is 16mm and the weight 70.49g.

Lead musket ball. Cast ball with a flattened circumferential belt from set up and with slight longitudinal striations on that belt from gas erosion, both effects occurring at the moment of firing an unwadded projectile. The ball is flattened at one end relative to the evidence for its position in the gun barrel, probably from its inclusion at one end of a multiple load. The mass, at well over an ounce, suggests this to be for use with a smoothbore muzzle loading firearm of military specification. This is closer to the formal weight of a 17th-century musket ball, which was defined as 1…

Lead alloy ball from a Baker rifle. The dating 1801-1837AD. The diameter is 16mm and the weight 24.89g
From the diameter and weight of this bullet, it appears to be a 0.625 (16 mm) bullet from an English Baker rifle type, originally the Pattern 1800 Infantry Rifle, but referred to since Victorian times as the Baker Rifle.
The Baker rifle (officially known as the Infantry Rifle) was a flintlock rifle used by the Rifle regiments of the British Arny during the Napoleonic Wars. It was the first standard-issue, British-made rifle accepted by the British armed forces. The Baker Rifle …

A lead alloy cast musket ball of post-medieval date (c.1600-1800). It has a light brown patina and some straitions on the surface, likely caused by animals chewing it post depositionally (Harding, 2012). The weight was suggest it was used in a carbine (Harding, 2012)., and it's condition makes it likely that it was never fired. Some parts of the casting seem are still visible.
Similar shot have been dated to the later post medieval period however the date range should extend into the early modern period as similar projectiles were used in firearms throughout this period. The contex…

A sub-spherical lead alloy musket ball, with an euneven surface and some encrustation. The ball is somewhat flattened, which could be the result of impact, or could have occured due to trampling or other post-depositional processed (Harding, 2012). The ball has a dark gray to mid brown patina and the weight suggests it is a pistol shot (Harding, 2012).
