Object type: VESSEL
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A small fragment of gold, dished and decorated on the outside of the curve, possibly broken from some kind of vessel. The decoration appears to be a plant design, of probable late medieval date. The inner side is undecorated. The exact character of the object is uncertain. There is no reason to doubt that this object meets the 10% threshold required by the Treasure Act, or that it is more than 300 years old. As such it therefore qualifies as Treasure under the terms of the Act.

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast blade of an iron axe, the socket end is missing from an old break and the blade is highly corroded. It is rectangular in cross section and triangular in plan. It is quite a small axe and very thick, 22.34mm. Axes do not change a great deal between the Roman and Modern periods and features that can suggest more precise dating, such as the socket shape and the way the blade joins the socket, are missing in this example.

A lead throwing die of unknown date. The die is cuboid in shape, with six sides. The holes have been drilled and the sides have not been organised in the standard 'seven' system, where the total of the holes on opposing sides add up to seven. 1 is opposite 3, 2 is opposite 4, 5 is opposite 6. A lead or lead alloy sphere of unknown purpose and unknown age. It is highly unlikely to be cannon shot for a couple of reasons. Firstly it does not conform to any known bore of the seventeenth century or later. Secondly, it is not solid lead as it is too light for its size. This latter fact also excludes a lot of the other usual uses for lead balls. The comparatively low weight may be due to the construction of the sphere or it may be manufactured from a lighter alloy. It may be part of larger object. If it is shot it is more likely to be for use in a pre seventeenth century firearm,…

Undateable gold or yellow metal object, probably metal working waste, possibly Early Medieval bullion. It is sub-circular in plan and oval in cross-section. The globular form is undiagnostic, and it is therefore not possible to date with any degree of certainty. The weight is quite close to that of a half-ertog or eyrir (4 or 4.26g), but not sufficiently close to justify a firm date, especially since the object does not appear to be a finished item, which means the weight may not be significant on any weight standard. Metal working melts are known from the Viking Age, but the artefact…
