Object type: FINGER RING
Broad period: EARLY MEDIEVAL
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Cast cu-alloy knotted finger ring dating from early Medieval-Modern times. It was made from one long square-sectioned wire of cu-alloy which was twisted in itself in places. The decoration on and around the bezel consists of two knots tied into each other and around the hoop with another knot tied around the hoop on either side - thus, four knots in all. The wire was only twisted in the loops of the knots, but not the hoop. Knotteds finger rings are very difficult to date. Simple examples made from silver have been found in Early Medieval contexts, but this type of ring has been popula…

This report concerns three items found near Carnforth in Lancashire in 2010. The items were found close to the find-spot of a Viking hoard discovered in 1997 (TAR 1998-1999, no. 84), and it was considered possible that the new finds might be stray finds from that hoard. Two of the finds are undiagnostic. Both appear to be a fairly base silver or lead alloy. One is a slender ingot with a section in the shape of an isosceles triangle with rounded angles, 72 x 8 x 8 mm, weight 39.38g, broken at one end. The form is known in the Viking Age, but it is undiagnostic, as the form is also kn…

Cast cu-alloy mount, possibly silvered. There are two large rectangular loops on the reverse, as well as a two smaller pierced lugs. The obverse is very corroded and much of the cast(?) decoration is lost. The centrepiece, held in place by a rivet(?) is missing, but there are very faint remains of intricate zoomorphic design (?) on the outer rim. Also, parts of silvering remain.

Fragment of a possible cast copper alloy strap end of early medieval date, possibly 9th century AD. Possibly Middle or Late Saxon, Thomas Class A. Only the upper part and part of the two misaligned rivet holes survives. It would have probably had a split-end, convex sides and possibly an animal head terminal, but it is too worn and damaged now to discern its original features. It appears that the obverse was decorated with moulded rather than niello or inlaid decoration. There is no trace of a rectangular central plate and the animal/beast was moulded just below the two rivet holes.

A cast lead alloy spindle whorl dating from the Early Medieval to the Medieval period, (AD1066-1500). The object is circular in plan and biconical with a large central circular perforation. The internal perforation measures 9.5mm in diameter. One face of the object is decorated with a series of moulded lines which radiate outwards from the perforation. Between each line are two moulded pellets. The opposite face is decorated with runic script. It is possible that the script is pseudo-runic, and merely intended to imitate a script, as not all letters seem to be genuine Anglo-Saxo…

Early medieval lead alloy weight. Suggested date: Early Medieval, 850-1000. The weight is cast biconvex with a central moulded aperture. It has a circular perforation with an internal diameter of 8mm. The weight is decorated with irregular sized pellets on one side. This object may have been used as a spindle whorl. The provision for a thick spindle probably indicates an Anglo-Scandinavian date. The diameter is 30mm and the weight 31.59g.

Lead alloy probably early medieval (Viking) weight probably dating circa 800 - 1100AD. The weight is circular in plan and the sides are convex tapering towards the base. The upper surface is flattened with a circular depression at the top probably for an inserted object now missing. The object is a creamy white in colour with an even patina. Abrasion caused by movement whilst within the plough soil may have resulted in the loss of some of the original surface detail. The diameter is 20mm, thickness 20mm and the weight 24.99g. Viking period lead weights were often set with Lunettes ty…

A cast lead spindle whorl probably dating from the Early Medieval to Medieval period, about AD 850 - 1100. The whorl is circular and has two flat faces of different sizes with curved sides, a shape which is classified as Walton Rogers form A2, thought to be in use in AD 600 - 1100. It has a circular central aperture of 9.5mm diameter. This size of spindle hole can suggest a Late Saxon date onwards. There is a depression which runs between the outer edge and the central aperture on one face. The whorl is uneven, being higher on one side than the other. It is undecorated and has a brown…

Late Early Medieval to early Medieval copper alloy top guard element from a sword, probably relating to something like a Petersen L pommel, for example DENO-F08A65, or a late Medieval to early Post Medieval dagger guard. It is oval in plan, curved in profile, and square in section. There is a rectangular central perforation (12 x 6mm) to accomadate the blade's tang. The object is undecorated but there is what appears to be remnant sooting, or possibly a coating of some sort, inside the inner side of the curve's concave area. If the object was part of a sword cross guard one would expe…

Lead conical spindle whorl, probably dating to the early medieval period (c. AD 700 - 1000). The spindle whorl is crudely shaped and unsymmetrical; it is broadly circular in plan and triangular in section, with a circular, central perforation. The spindle whorl has a white patina. It is 16.75mm in diameter, 12.50mm in thickness and weighs 15.90g. The diameter of the central perforation is 8.94mm. The form of this object is similar to examples that have been recorded as early medieval in date. These include: SWYOR-6E4DAA, NLM-5EA8A8 and NLM-09370E.

Copper alloy bar ingot with rounded and flattish ends 'finger' form. The ingot is D shaped in section with a flat base and convex tip and tapers in width and thickness from one end to the other. The length is 59mm and the width is 11mm. The ingot is not diagnostic and is therefore difficult to date; ingots of this form in precious metals have been found associated with late Early Medieval period finds. (Blackburn and Rogerson Medieval Archaeology 1993, 222-4). It has been suggested that copper alloy ingots from Norfolk of bar-like form and with transverse hammering may belong to the V…

An early-medieval barrel-shaped weight perhaps related to weighing of bullion and Islamic silver coinage (Dirhams) in Viking period exchanges for which these weights are often associated. (cf. SWYOR-E16C55). It is suggested that the weight may be part of a series based on the Viking ora or ortugar weighing systems, used for measuring bullion. This might indicate a date range in the 9th-11th centuries for the current object. It is biconical in form with flattened top and bottom surfaces. The weight has an iron core surrounded by a largely copper alloy casing. There are only 5 other …

A copper alloy shield-shaped sword scabbard chape of early-medieval date. The chape appears to have been cast and has identical openwork on both sides which appear similar in style to the Scandinavian 'Birka Falcon', or Paulsen's 'Swedish-Varangian' style. Placing it between C9th - C11th. Such style chapes have mostly been found in Eastern Europe. The chape has a rounded 'V' shape profile and four cavities copied on both sides that have been cut out. The top two are in an upside and back-to-front 'L' shape; the bottom two of a comma type shape. The chape has a greenish brown patina an…
