Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Two amorphic piece of copper alloy slag. Found in an area with Bronze Age and Roman artefacts. The surface is characterised by lumps and hollows and has a tin element is indicated relating to bronze working. The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted. Fragments of casting waste like this one are hard to date. Scientific analysis of the elemental composition of the copper alloy would allow a more acc…

Object type: BROOCH
Broad period: ROMAN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Published Find published
Early Roman cast copper-alloy zoomorphic Dragonesque brooch, incomplete as the tail is missing and also the pin. A crudely made example with angular edges, unlike most others this has a reversed 'S' shape. The reverse is flat with many parallel scratch marks which probably derive from the movement of the pin. The obverse is decorated with a 'Celtic-style' moulded decoration and there are circles in relief on each 'dragon's head', mimicking an eye and a smaller nostril. Although this is probably a type of Dragonesque brooch that did not carry any enamel in the grooves and spaces, it is…

The ten coins range in date from AD69-79; all coins were minted under the emperor Vespasian, showing his head on the obverse. The collection was worth 20 asses, which is not an unreasonable amount to carry in a wrist-purse. Since we have no evidence of burial or of a container, it is hard to know whether these coins should be classified as a hoard or as a multiple casual loss. Catalogue (Dr David Shotter): 1) Sestertius: Head of Vespasian right/ [IVDAEA CAPTA S C] As RIC 2(2) (Vespasian), 159 2) Sestertius: Head of Vespasian right/ [ROMA S C] (??) 3) As: Head of Vespasian right ...]…
