Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
A probable piece of cast copper alloy waste; a casting well of unknown date. The remnant would have been from the funnel shaped neck of a mould. Consequently, the waste itself is funnel shaped, sub-conical, with an oval, uneven top surface, and tapering towards a broken runner or sprue 'foot'. There is a second runner, perhaps leading to the next mould, projecting to the side. The object is 22.7mm long, 9.7mm high, 16.8mm wide and weighs 7g. It has a grey green patina. For a similar, although lead alloy, example see HESH-CFC988. A number of these objects have been dated to the B…

Copper-alloy pendant in the form of a winged erect phallus of uncertain date (c. AD 43 - 1800). The shaft of the phallus curves slightly upwards and widens from a pair of wings above a pair of testicles. There is a suspension loop between the wings, which is pierced slightly off-centre. The object is detailed in its design: transverse grooves on the front of the wings give the impression of feathers and a pair of parallel grooves run along the bottom of the shaft, the head of which is picked out by curved parallel grooves across the top and sides. The object has a worn and chipped sur…

A large round copper alloy ring, which might be part of a horse harness, or could be, because of it's size more possibly a suspension ring for a cauldron, or a tethering ring. It is circular in shape with a round section of 7.5mm, thinning to 6.5mm in certain places, suggesting wear. It is difficult to ascribe a particular period to this piece. Possibly Iron Age to Medieval. See WILT-D31115 and WHM-1530 The diameter is 106mm

Heavily constructed copper alloy lobed plate with two piercings through which domed rivets pass. Its date and function are yet to be determined with any confidence. At first glance it appears to be a fixing plate for a hinge. However this is unlikely, but not impossible, as both rivets appear complete and there doesn't seem to be a large enough gap for the plate to have been attached to anything wooden. It may have been originally mounted on a book, or been a form of strap end/weight, or some form of mount or fitting. Dates to anytime between c43 and c1900 AD. The length is 60mm, w…

Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
An assemblage of eleven copper alloy band or strap fragments, possibly from a stave built bucket. From the fragments it has been possible to adduce that at least some of the straps were originally 66mm wide, attached by rivets of pegs through perforations approximately 3mm in diameter, and probably originally reactangular in plan. There are no diagnostic features that can allow a reliable dating. The fragments could date to anytime from the Bronze Age to the Post Medieval. Suggested date range c2350 BC to c1850 AD Total weight of fragments is 68.23g.

Unidentified copper alloy object, possibly a Romano British brooch fragment or a Post Medieval firearm trigger element. The object is mis-shapen due to being heat effected or concreted or miscast. Overall form and dimensions are suggestive of a Romano British brooch though the lower projection is possibly a little thick for a brooch bow or catchplate. There is also a resemblance to basic firearm triggers and the orientation is correct though the section above could be seen to be too 'chunky'. If it is a firearm trigger it is likely to predate the common usage of percussion ammunition.…

Treasure tracking no. 2020 T56 The fragment was thought at first inspection to be two silver coins of an unclear date that had been fused / melted together. The presence of identifying detail was uncertain and it was requested to be brought to the British Museum for further examination, where it was received in December 2021. Description: The object is not clearly identifiable but does not appear to be two coins. It is a fragment of a metal object that has broken on one edge and shows slight lamination in the break. The fragment is flat with a rounded top edge, with the side edges …

Two amorphic piece of copper alloy slag. Found in an area with Bronze Age and Roman artefacts. The surface is characterised by lumps and hollows and has a tin element is indicated relating to bronze working. The slag has a good deep green patina, similar to that seen on some local Bronze Age metalwork, so it may date from this period. If this lump of slag is indeed Bronze Age, it is interesting that it has survived and was not re-melted. Fragments of casting waste like this one are hard to date. Scientific analysis of the elemental composition of the copper alloy would allow a more acc…

A  copper alloy object. It is sub rectangular in shape, one of the long sides has two sloping elements which form a shallow central point, both the short sides slope outwards to the bottom. This side has an extended central area. There are two holes, one in each of the top corners. It is very thin. There is a design and possibly writing on one face but this is no longer distinguishable. It is not possible to confirm the manufacturing process although the thickness may suggest that it was pressed, and therefore, along with the lack of imagery, there is no indication of age. D…
