Object type: VESSEL

Workflow stage: Awaiting validation
A small fragment of gold, dished and decorated on the outside of the curve, possibly broken from some kind of vessel. The decoration appears to be a plant design, of probable late medieval date. The inner side is undecorated. The exact character of the object is uncertain.
There is no reason to doubt that this object meets the 10% threshold required by the Treasure Act, or that it is more than 300 years old. As such it therefore qualifies as Treasure under the terms of the Act.

Cast blade of an iron axe, the socket end is missing from an old break and the blade is highly corroded. It is rectangular in cross section and triangular in plan. It is quite a small axe and very thick, 22.34mm. Axes do not change a great deal between the Roman and Modern periods and features that can suggest more precise dating, such as the socket shape and the way the blade joins the socket, are missing in this example.

A lead or lead alloy sphere of unknown purpose and unknown age. It is highly unlikely to be cannon shot for a couple of reasons. Firstly it does not conform to any known bore of the seventeenth century or later. Secondly, it is not solid lead as it is too light for its size. This latter fact also excludes a lot of the other usual uses for lead balls. The comparatively low weight may be due to the construction of the sphere or it may be manufactured from a lighter alloy. It may be part of larger object. If it is shot it is more likely to be for use in a pre seventeenth century firearm,…

Lead spindle whorl of uncertain date within the period c. AD 43 - 1800. The spindle whorl is broadly oval in shape, with a flat bottom face and a convex upper face of uneven thickness. Lead spindle whorls can be difficult to date without archaeological context as a similar form was used from the Roman period to the modern day. This is especially the case for crudely-formed examples such as this one.
