Lead gaming piece or weight of uncertain date within the period c. 43 - 1500 AD. The object is circular with a flat bottom face and convex, decorative upper face. Raised lines extend from a central dome to the outer edge of the upper face; interspersed between these are raised circles. The sections between the transverse lines are also slightly domed. The object has a cream-coloured patina. A large section of the central dome on the upper face is chipped. Otherwise the object survives in good condition. The object is 25.88mm in diameter, 6.59mm in thickness and weighs 19g. The over…

Object type: CASTING WASTE
Broad period: UNKNOWN
County: Lancashire
Workflow stage: Awaiting validation Find awaiting validation
Undateable gold or yellow metal object, probably metal working waste, possibly Early Medieval bullion. It is sub-circular in plan and oval in cross-section. The globular form is undiagnostic, and it is therefore not possible to date with any degree of certainty. The weight is quite close to that of a half-ertog or eyrir (4 or 4.26g), but not sufficiently close to justify a firm date, especially since the object does not appear to be a finished item, which means the weight may not be significant on any weight standard. Metal working melts are known from the Viking Age, but the artefact…

Stone ring found in the River Ribble by a metal detector user, but as an 'eyes only' find. The finder describes the river as being particularly low at the time of his discovery due to hot weather. The tint and location could both suggest the object to be of Limestone. He kindly supplies oblique and direct images [used to compile the accompanying composite view] and the following notes on dimensions: 'It weighs 65 grams and has a circumference of 73mm. The outer wall measures 21mm at its widest by 12mm at its thickest point'. Armlets of jet and shale are known particularly from Ear…

A probable piece of cast copper alloy waste; a casting well of unknown date. The remnant would have been from the funnel shaped neck of a mould. Consequently, the waste itself is funnel shaped, sub-conical, with an oval, uneven top surface, and tapering towards a broken runner or sprue 'foot'. There is a second runner, perhaps leading to the next mould, projecting to the side. The object is 22.7mm long, 9.7mm high, 16.8mm wide and weighs 7g. It has a grey green patina. For a similar, although lead alloy, example see HESH-CFC988. A number of these objects have been dated to the B…

Lead spindle whorl of uncertain date within the period c. AD 43 - 1800. The spindle whorl is broadly oval in shape, with a flat bottom face and a convex upper face of uneven thickness. It has a central, circular perforation. The object has a white patina. It is 41.46mm in diameter, 12.39mm in thickness and weighs 73.68g. The diameter of the central perforation is 11.28mm. Lead spindle whorls can be difficult to date without archaeological context as a similar form was used from the Roman period to the modern day. This is especially the case for crudely-formed examples such as this one.

Copper-alloy pendant in the form of a winged erect phallus of uncertain date (c. AD 43 - 1800). The shaft of the phallus curves slightly upwards and widens from a pair of wings above a pair of testicles. There is a suspension loop between the wings, which is pierced slightly off-centre. The object is detailed in its design: transverse grooves on the front of the wings give the impression of feathers and a pair of parallel grooves run along the bottom of the shaft, the head of which is picked out by curved parallel grooves across the top and sides. The object has a worn and chipped sur…

A large round copper alloy ring, which might be part of a horse harness, or could be, because of it's size more possibly a suspension ring for a cauldron, or a tethering ring. It is circular in shape with a round section of 7.5mm, thinning to 6.5mm in certain places, suggesting wear. It is difficult to ascribe a particular period to this piece. Possibly Iron Age to Medieval. See WILT-D31115 and WHM-1530 The diameter is 106mm

Heavily constructed copper alloy lobed plate with two piercings through which domed rivets pass. Its date and function are yet to be determined with any confidence. At first glance it appears to be a fixing plate for a hinge. However this is unlikely, but not impossible, as both rivets appear complete and there doesn't seem to be a large enough gap for the plate to have been attached to anything wooden. It may have been originally mounted on a book, or been a form of strap end/weight, or some form of mount or fitting. Dates to anytime between c43 and c1900 AD. The length is 60mm, w…

Lead alloy, or lead, perforated circular weight or spindle whorl of unknown age. The weight has a circular perforation. It has an external diameter of 21mm, and the central perforation has a maximum diameter of 6mm. The weight has seen a lot of use and has suffered damage and wear. In the "Finds Recording Guide", Geake (2001, p66) points out that: "The function of lead weights would have varied, from spindle-whorls to fishing weights to trade weights." She adds that spindle whorls should ideally be circular and must have a central perforation (ibid.). It is possible, therefore, tha…

Lead or lead alloy fragment of an unknown date, possibly casting waste or a partially melted or miscast object. It does appears to have deliberately cast holes, similar to the openwork style, and possible ring and dot decoration. Its original intended purpose is unknown but if it isn't casting waste it could be part of a Late Early Medieval to early Medieval strap-end of Thomas's Class E, similar to LANCUM-2409F1 but cast in lead. Other lead alloy strap ends of the period on the database include NMS-82ED04, NLM-890976, and NMS-45E545. It may have been be a failed lead mold former asso…

A lead alloy pyramidal standing weight of unknown date, about AD 43 - 1800. The weight has a rounded square base, and flat triangular sides, tapering to a blunt point at the apex. There is a rectangular hole through the top of the weight. The base is concave, caused by the lead shrinking as it cooled after casting. There are no obvious marks or decoration, but there are some grains of quartz embedded in the lead. Height 60.5mm, width 36.4mm, thickness 33mm. Weight 292g. This mass does not fit easily into any known system of measurement. It may have been a weight for a specific pu…
