A probable piece of cast copper alloy waste; a casting well of unknown date. The remnant would have been from the funnel shaped neck of a mould. Consequently, the waste itself is funnel shaped, sub-conical, with an oval, uneven top surface, and tapering towards a broken runner or sprue 'foot'. It has a central, circular perforation. The object has a white patina. It is 41.46mm in diameter, 12.39mm in thickness and weighs 73.68g. The diameter of the central perforation is 11.28mm. Lead spindle whorls can be difficult to date without archaeological context as a similar form was used from the Roman period to the modern day. This is especially the case for crudely-formed examples such as this one.
