Fragment of a medieval copper-alloy book clasp of hinged type. The loop survives, with a central hole which would have fitted over a peg on the opposite cover of the book. The terminal is now missing, but the hinge loops on the other side of the loop survive, with a bar held between them. The metal is mid green in colour with a slightly pitted patina. The length is 18mm, the width is 16mm and the weight 2.87g. Most examples of this object type appear to date to the 14th or 15th centuries.

Incisions on the wrists may indicate that the hands are gloved. At the back of the ring is the popular motif of a heart sprouting flowers. There is a hair-line crack across the width of the left wrist. The gilding is partially preserved, particularly in the recesses of the engraved decoration.

It collars around the top where there is an integral loop. The loop is decorated with 3 perpendicular integral knops which are set equally apart-21mm- one on either side of the loop and one on the top. It would have been connected to a horse's harness pad or yoke for the driving reins to pass through. There are generally two per horse and often decorative.

Small late 8th/early 9th century Viking lead weight into which has been inserted a piece of Irish, Scottish or Pictish metalwork of an 'Insular Art' style. While the weight itself was made from cast lead, the piece of inserted metalwork was made from cast cu-alloy which was subsequently gilded (small fragments of gilding remain in the grooves of the carved decoration). The decoration of the cu-alloy inlaid piece is fragmentary and seems to have been part of an ornamental interlacing, probably floral scrollwork border with a thinner, hatched border underneath.
