A lead or lead alloy sphere of unknown purpose and unknown age. It is highly unlikely to be cannon shot for a couple of reasons. Firstly it does not conform to any known bore of the seventeenth century or later. Secondly, it is not solid lead as it is too light for its size. This latter fact also excludes a lot of the other usual uses for lead balls. The comparatively low weight may be due to the construction of the sphere or it may be manufactured from a lighter alloy. It may be part of larger object. If it is shot it is more likely to be for use in a pre seventeenth century firearm,…

Unidentified copper alloy object, possibly a Romano British brooch fragment or a Post Medieval firearm trigger element. The object is mis-shapen due to being heat effected or concreted or miscast. Overall form and dimensions are suggestive of a Romano British brooch though the lower projection is possibly a little thick for a brooch bow or catchplate. There is also a resemblance to basic firearm triggers and the orientation is correct though the section above could be seen to be too 'chunky'. If it is a firearm trigger it is likely to predate the common usage of percussion ammunition.…

A copper alloy object. It is sub rectangular in shape, one of the long sides has two sloping elements which form a shallow central point, both the short sides slope outwards to the bottom. This side has an extended central area. There are two holes, one in each of the top corners. It is very thin. There is a design and possibly writing on one face but this is no longer distinguishable. It is not possible to confirm the manufacturing process although the thickness may suggest that it was pressed, and therefore, along with the lack of imagery, there is no indication of age.

Cast cu-alloy token, probably made from a re-used coin or metal disc, dating from the later post-medieval or early modern period, i.e. c. 1700-1900. The disc was very worn when it was re-worked into a token and there was a strong possibility that it had been a Roman as or dupondius. However, Dr D Shotter had a look at the token and couldn't identify it as a Roman coin. Furthermore, the disc is too thick to have been a post-medieval or early modern coin. It now seems more likely that it just started out as a flat piece of casting residue which was then stamped and turned into a token. T…

Cast cu-alloy unidentified object, possibly a six-sided brass gaming counter and dating from the 18th or 19th century. It is solid-cast with a perforation in the centre, possibly to receive the central pin/handle around which the spinner was spun. It has the size of a six-sided spinner or (Jewish) dreidel, but most of the Jewish dreidels are four-sided and only very few six-sided. Unfortunately, the surfaces are to worn to make out any numbering or lettering.

Due to its undiagnostic nature it cannot be dated closely however the condition of the lead suggests a Post-Medieval date is likely.
The object may have functioned as a palm guard however there are no diagnostic features. Palm guards were for use by a leather worker to protect the palm whilst stitching. Bailey (1995, 64-65) dates such objects to the 17th century onwards.

Cast cu-alloy handle, possibly a drawer pull, of late post-medieval or early modern date, i.e. 1700-1900. It is roughly shaped like a buckle frame, but since there is no perforation for the pin, it does not seem to be a buckle with integral plate. The attachment/pivoting point seems to be at the back of the object. The shape and size of the loop suggests that it was probably used as a handle. Two very small rivet holes remains near the rim of the fragment; the whole bowl/boss would have had approx. six rivet holes, given that there was the same distance between each two of them. Modern object, possibly a handle or part of a lever, dating from the 19th or 20th century. The object appears complete, though alsurfaces are very worn. It is composed of a short moulded piece with a handle/loop at the top. However, the loop is incomplete but resembled two horns. Even though the loop and the tips of the horns are very worn, they do not appear to have been a full circle once. There are no obvious means of attaching the object to anything, but it may have sat in a round setting with the two mouldings at the lower end wedging it in place, thus giving it the ability to swivel.

Unidentified lead alloy object of unknown age. It is roughly circular in plan and resembles a brimmed hat in overall form. It looks like a possible pot mend but it has been marked with four 'groups' of incised lines. The first of these 'groups' is a series of that forms a circumferal band around the base of the central raised boss of the object. On the top of this central raised area is a group of occasionally intersecting nail shaped (also resembles a modern 'I' with only one serif) impressions. These appear quite random and the nail shape is probably an a…

A copper alloy artefcat that may have been part of a statue or similar. Its shape is unidentifiable but resembles an anvil, althoughh it is unlikely that it was one. A broad foot comes to a point, the top of the foot expands out. The inside of the top (as photgraphed here) of the item is hollow with a central 'pip' that may have been a mount or attachment of some kind. It has an even dark green patina. The lack of stylistic cues means that it is not possible to date the object

A broken copper alloy fixture or fitting probably of the post medieval period, AD 1500 - 1900. It comprises a bar of D shaped cross-section which is broken at one end. At the other end it bends backwards into a loop with the end of the bar butting against the back of the bar. The bar tapers towards the loop. It is undecorated with a green and brown patina. Dimensions are length 74.2mm; width 12.6mm; thickness 3.7mm; weight 23.53g. The function of this object is uncertain but it appears to be some type of fixture or fitting, perhaps a window hinge or the end of a tool handle or implement.

Cast copper alloy unidentified object probably dating from the early modern period, that is the 18th or 19th century. The object is rectangular in shape with a flat back and 18 spikes on the inside. There are two rows of 'spikes' on each side, with a row of four on the outside and a row of five on the inside. It is undecorated, but all surfaces are very worn so it is unknown if it was decorated in the past. Its function is unknown, but the spikes may have held the object in place on a leather strap or harness.

Cast lead-alloy fragment, possibly the arm of a crucifix dating from the late post-medieval or earlier modern period, i.e. 1500-1800. The fragment is roughly triangular-shaped and decorated with a very basic inset scrollwork pattern. The only point that shows breakage is at the narrow end which suggests that it may have been part of a crucifix. The artefact was badly made and there is a casting flaw at one of the corners where there was not enough lead-alloy to fill the mould.

R.F, 4. large zigzag pattern, 5. 19, 6. S+F or S+T. The '19' is printed in a different script and may have been added later, e.g. as a customs or sales mark(?).

Fragment of a possible cast copper alloy strap end of early medieval date, possibly 9th century AD. Possibly Middle or Late Saxon, Thomas Class A. Only the upper part and part of the two misaligned rivet holes survives. It would have probably had a split-end, convex sides and possibly an animal head terminal, but it is too worn and damaged now to discern its original features. It appears that the obverse was decorated with moulded rather than niello or inlaid decoration. There is no trace of a rectangular central plate and the animal/beast was moulded just below the two rivet holes.
