Lead seal possibly used to seal bags of grain dating to the 19th to early 20th century probably originally bearing the name of the processor. This is a very common find on farmland. Lead seals of this type vary in size and the design impression is usually week. Some seals carry bust of monarchs and these were known as Alnage seals and were attached to rolls of cloth. The diameter is 30mm and the weight 25.21g.

This object is probably a cast lead token. The earlier tokens were made from pewter but the lead tokens are normally associated with the 17th – 18th centuries. The exact purpose has not been ascertained but it seems most likely that they were used by the working class as a form of low denomination currency as they were made at a time when small change was in short supply. The lead tokens seem to be mainly associated with rural areas. They were often used as a gap filler when when copper and brass tokens ceased to be produced in 1672. Landowners often found lead tokens a useful way to…

Lead-alloy bag or sack seal with London shield, dating from the post-medieval period, probably from around AD 1661. The seal is a four-part seal which was folded over and sealed. It was composed of two square central panels, a circle on one side and a circular panel with intregral knop/rivet on the other sides. The seal was used by folding it over in the middle, pushing the knop through the circle and hammering in flat on the other side. The seal was officiated with two stamps on the sqaure panels which are still somewhat visible: a (probably not crowned) portcullis with 1661 above and…

A Post-Medieval incomplete cast lead or lead alloy bale seal, perhaps issued during the reign of Queen Anne. This disc features an eagle on both sides and appears to have been made in Hull. As Egan (1994, 60) states, the relief designs on these alnage seals are characterised by fine detail resulting from well-engraved dies. Alnage seals indicated the flax or cloth had been checked for quality by a Crown official and that the subsidy (tax) had been paid. The length is 21mm, width 18mm, thickness 3 mm and the weight is 9.64g.

Post Medieval royal wax seal, broken. The obverse shows a man mounted on a horse, the reverse shows a man seated on a throne. Given the size of it, it is probably a ‘great seal’ and would have been used on a fairly important document. It is made of brown wax rather than green or red. It is made in two layers with the parchment tag (now cut off) sandwiched between. This suggests 1700s or later. That is backed up by the word ‘Archithesaurius’ around the rim. George I (1714-27) used this: he called himself Arch-Treasurer of the Holy Roman Empire. Some later monarchs probably used…
