Grey Slate
Probable Pencil. Turned rod of slate; a tapered end bears smoothing on four opposed faces and a rounded end. Residual turning lines appear at this point. The rod becomes thicker beyond a stepped edge to the 'point', which confers a slightly bullet-like appearance. Broken. Suggested date: Modern, 1800-1900.

An incomplete cast lead pencil of uncertain dating, but probably Medieval (AD 1200 to AD 1500). The stylus is circular sectioned, with a break due to an air bubble created during the casting process. The other end is rounded to a blunt point. It is a mid grey colour, with an even surface patina. Several similar styli have been recorded on the PAS database including NLM-908653, LEIC-1414C8, YORYM-C50AD3, NLM-3AACA8, YORYM-100437.
