Probably a Roman copper alloy key. It has a round bow which is now cracked through in one place. The shank is circular in section and terminates in a simple 'L' shaped ward. Some of the ward & shank has been lost. Its overall appearance is typical of medieval key but the wards are at right angles to the loop which is more a typically Roman characteristic. Probably dates to between c43 and c410 AD. The length is 39mm, width 16mm, thickness 15mm, and the weight 5.67g.

Post medieval to modern hand made copper alloy key. Its length indicates it was probably for a large chest or a door. It has a solid shank, with a bow formed by flattening the shank and perforating it. There is a low raised collar around the shank near the bit (teeth). This key is a bit of a conundrum as the majority of it could easily be ascribed to the nineteenth century or later. However the bit is more akin to those of a much earlier era (eg BERK-CC5682). In spite of the lack of comfortable parallels on the database, the key is most likely to date to between c1837 and c1939 AD. …

A copper alloy slide key, possibly dating to the fourteenth century AD. The key possesses a circular section, kidney shaped bow. This extends to a circular section stem with incised circumferential groove and collar. The stem then becomes rectangular in section and extends to a shield shaped bit with one large and two smaller T-shaped rectangular adjoining apertures. Similar keys with shield shaped bits [269, 270] are illustrated in Egan 'The Medieval Household Daily Living c.1150-c.1450', 102.
